85mm f/1.8 and fringing

Hi guys, I just have a quick question regarding the 85mm f/1.8 - Does it tend to pick up a lot of 'fringing' at a wide aperture?

I know most lenses probably pick up some fringing, especially in areas of contrast...I just seem to be noticing it a lot more with my lens I bought recently, compared to other lenses I have. Maybe even in places I wouldn't consider to be of great contrast. The purple fringing is more prominent.

It's probably just me over analysing, or just a normal characteristic of the lens.

But just in case, I would like your opinions.

A couple of full size samples:-

This is a baffling lens. I have shots that should have produced fringing such as backlit portraits with the background blown out and no fringing shows up along the hairline. Other times, it shows up at any opportunity. Exposure helps (don't err on overexposure) but that's about all I can advise.

First shot.... I assume you are referring to the dried branches at the bottom of the image. Ya. Not something I would have expected.

Second link doesn't work.

Totally expected. If shot wide open, this lens can produce some of the most obvious purple fringing.

That said, sometimes it doesn't show up as badly. I tend to shoot it at f/2.0 or smaller to reduce this, but really, it's just part of this lens wide open.

I might look up some of my own f/1.8 shots for comparison.

Yes. Most of my work with the 85mm f/1.8 was shooting high school basketball at f/2.0. The purple fringing seemed most obvious where white met black or another dark color. Not so much on the edges of the white, but where the white met another dark color.

Only under good lighting conditions and a perfect exposure did I see absolutely no purple fringing. I'm kind of surprised your outdoor shot picked up that much. It's definitely noticeable at the 100%, but much less on the web-sized image.

Hmm bohdank I actually know what you mean, I take some shots and it will be fine, but here and there (like the samples given) I get a couple which display prominent fringing.

Thank you guys for your replies and the additional samples.

i feel for your purple fringing concerns....

I was somewhat upset my 85L 1.2 also shows lots of purple fringing (and CA)....
I wonder if this is an issue that could be minimized if its sent back for adjustment.
ie. maybe some lenses have alignment of lenses that could be improved.

Thoughts anyone? for 1.8 and 1.2 lenses like the two 85 mm's....can purple fringing and/or Chromatic aberation be improved by sending lenses in for work at canon?
(attached files are 85mm L at 1.2 and note neither is fixable via DPP CA adjustments for this lense on my 7D)

one more example of purple fringe plus CA (note green on right, purple on left) at 1.2
is this a bad copy of the lense or is this within expectations?

Doesn't help for longitudinal CAs (bokeh fringing).

I'd wait on the Sigma 85 1.4 if you don't NEED this lens right now.

The 85/1.4 is not going to be cheap. The 85/1.8 screams value IMO.

Ouch.
I have noticed that when lenses are out of whack, it can have worse fringing. I noticed the amount change my a marked amount when dialing in different MFA amounts.
