Hello,
I've been shooting some portraits with this lighting setup:
A light above and a bit to the right side and a reflector in front below. What do you think about this? I tried to achieve butterfly lighting. Not sure if I succeded though :) Anyway, opinions are more than welcome.

Equipment used:
Canon 350D with Helios 44M via m42/EOS adapter, 58mm F2 wide open

I'm a lay person regarding studio lighting and terminology, but I'd say you've got some pretty moody looking lighting going on here. Good B+W conversion as well.

Perfect focus point for sure, F2 might be a tad soft, the DOF is very narrow, but very well done.

Agree with Lundgrenj about the dof but the lighting's great and a very nice shot.

Actually, DOF was intentional. I usually shoot at f2.8 because DOF becomes so shallow at larger apertures it's too easy to miss the point of focus. This time I wanted to see how it turns out. I think the lens itself is sharp enough even wide open but I missed the eye by that much. Eye lashes look sharp but the eye itself is a bit beyond the "sharp" zone. And I admit I'd like more sharpness around the chin. Anyway, thanks Jim :)

I like it. I think it's very nice.

About the DOF... when the eye is not in focus, the whole thing looks messed up. To me it looks like the nose and eyebrows are much sharper than the eye. That's the trouble you'll run into with such a shallow dof and the autofocus systems we use. Since eyes are "in" and the rest of the face is "out," even when you use the center focus spot technique, it's still not always accurate.

Thank you. You are right about the DOF. True, it is very hard to focus accurately with such shallow dof. I used a manual focus lens Helios 44M though so I'm not concerned about auto focus systems. I believe it was a kit lens for old Russian camera "Zenit".

This is a self-portrait too so I focused on thin air and then just hoped to be at the right distance when the shutter went off
