I had an opportunity to get to a local park for a few hours. I was working with my 450d and a canon 55-250IS. The other photographers there may have giggled a wee bit. I was surrounded by a crowd of very large L lenses. But, here is what some cropping got me:

They are heavily cropped, and aren't the greatest technically, but given the glass I was working with I'm reasonably happy with the results.

The rest can be viewed at http://www.flickr.com/photos/fear-mn (external link)

Comments, input, advise all welcome. Aside from the "buy a 100-400" of course, I know that would make a great improvement.

Thanks all!

Great way to capture the posture coming in for a landing on #4. It's both unusual and captivating.

For the in flight shots, did you have IS turned on? Also what was the shutter speed set to? For in flight shots, I tend to shoot at least at 1/1500th and turn IS off.

It's really hard shooting around all the small branches - nice first effort for what you had to work with! And don't worry about the other guys with the 400's and 500's (or bigger!) I've made some of my best pics with my backup lens and camera while the 500 sat on the tripod!

I did have IS turned on. I also realized after I had my AF point set to center only. I was trying to keep the ISO low, and with 1/1500 I would have been at ISO 400, don't know if that would have been bad. Most were shot at 1/640.

Nice set for what you are working on, I think you got the right idea going, now just need to dial in the skills that come with time. Hope to see more

A 400 ISO on that camera will look fine - just make sure you expose to the right of your histogram. It took me a while to buy in to this but you're better off having a right exposed shot with a higher ISO than one that doesn't have enough shutter speed.

Checkout the link below - this is from a 50D at ISO 800 - with an exposure that was to the right of the histogram.

Hope this helps!

The pics are gone! Can you re-link them, or attach a few?
Thank you.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

I'm seeing the pictures just fine right now, perhaps empty your cache?

And these are a good start, I like #3 the best :)

Apparently I've been dubbed Foxy.

Thanks for the input everyone, and the kind words. It's good to know my first trip out was worthwhile. And I've got a couple tips for the next trip out.
