Little update. Looks like they're actually going to be 8x2 with 1ft logos on the top and bottom (school on top, sponsor on bottom). That leaves me with a 6x2 area to fill. Makes for an almost life-size image, but the subjects will have to be pretty much straight up and down.
That will still be pretty tough to fill. Attached is an example cropped to 3:1 ratio to show how even with a slight amount of width it will quickly throw in a lot of dead space. The first year I did these we tried to go with a ratio very similar and it was a real challenge. Actually had to retake all the photos to get it to work out. Not just because of the height to width ratio problems but because of variations from photo to photo. You could pretty easily go with a 2x6, save some money, have plenty of space for your top and bottom logos and still have the subjects be as big as they would be on a 2x8.
One suggestion I forgot to make earlier that the last paragraph reminded me of is use a tripod and set up your first shot using the tallest subject and use either a prime lens or tape down your zoom ring. I learned the hard way that if you don't you will lose proper height proportions from picture to picture when they are hanging side by side. You will also end up with uneven horizon references from banner to banner. Since you need to maximize your pixels to handle the mega enlargement setting up based on your tallest subject will give you the max pixels for all the shots.
My goal is to try and shoot everything so if you hung the banners side by side they would look like they were all one big picture and everyone is size proportional to each other.
Good luck and have fun.
