Looking for my next prime, and I like focal lengths normal to wide.
I have been tossing up between the Canon 28 2.8 or the 35 f2. and I am sure that I will like both of the focal lengths so my question is, is one of these a stand out over the other? (and why?)
btw. it will be used on both a 400d and a 1d classic.

Thanks,

Jason.

i've read better things about the sigma 30mm 1.4. sharp wide open and has a fast auto focus.

The Sigma 30/1.4 is the best bet to work well on both. And yes, it does work on both. If you want one of the Canon's, then I'd take the 35/2.

actually, never mind... it's only for crop cameras:

A few people use it on their 1D body with good results. I wouldn't discount it.

I know the Sigma 30 works on 1D series, but I'm sure there is some vignetting. You can search in the Sigma 30mm thread and see...

I have the 35f2 and it works fine wide open. Stopped down, it is sharp from corner to corner. I think that it is an easy pick over the 28f2.8. If your comparison were with the f1.8, it would be a tough call - but I am happy with the 35f2. I prefer the focal length on a crop and the lens is sharp.

I will try to address the question you asked about 2 Canon lenses... The 35mm 2.0 I never personally used, but I've seen some excellent photos from it, and most owners seem to really like it. The 28mm 2.8 I have and it has outstanding center sharpness wide open. I would not say that the 35mm an easy pick over the 28mm. Wide open, the 28mm may be slightly sharper, but these are both fine underrated lenses. Both lenses are inexpensive when bought new. Used, the 35mm commands a high price (I think its because many stores are out of stock). The 28mm used can be had very cheaply ($120 - $160).

The 35 is a full stop brighter. If dark places and ambient lighting are a requirement...

I just got the 30 and love it! When I was looking, I saw several shots taken with it and a 1d, which looked good.

Good luck
