I've had the tripod ring off my 70-200 for basketball and wrestling. Now that we are moving back to outdoor sports, I went to put the ring on and it appears to be stripped somehow. Has anyone fixed this themselves? I can drive to Canon in Jamesburg and have them look at it, but I wanted to know if anyone ever tried this repair themselves.

Thanks!

What's stripped? The nut that the screw tightens into? It just spins when you try and tighten it? If that's what it is, there is an access panel with two screws on the mount. I haven't opened it on mine, but I'd assume that you could order a replacement part from Canon parts and do it yourself pretty easily.

See if you can fix it yourself because replacing that part is insanely expensive. Which part is stripped?

what he said! it should not be stripped. just fiddle with it and it should catch. I think you posted too soon by the sound of it

Thanks for all of your replies. I have tried for about 2 hours to get it to "catch", and it is not working. I'll try opening the panel up and just take a look at what is in there first before I start fiddling with it. I don't think the screw is stripped, at least upon inspection it does not appear to be so. Maybe the answer lies inside.

You may not have line it up correctly before screwing it. if it is stripped or gone bad? just get whole new replacement. ebay have it cheap. Dont know if its metal or plastic for the ebay ring.

if you have a look online you can find a thread tapper for it, we use them at work to insert threads into metal, i dont know what size it would be either imperial or metric, but once you know it might be worth a look.
