I've sesarched here and google...I've read the manual....and I'm just so confused...or my 40D isn't working right (yeah right

...it's me of course I know, but still, here's the question...
Can the shutter button be set for single shot AF, locked once set, as in single-shot...aaaaaannnnnnd simultaneously....
Can the AF-on button be set to AI-servo for continuous focusing....
.....giving me the option to lock focus with the shutter button while having the option of continuous focusing with the with the AF-on button....
I suppose the opposite would be acceptable if that's possible...but I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with that...if it's possible I'd try it...
