Peter, Like Rafa said your doin' well right off the bat and as long as you're having fun then really that's the most important thing.

Now my take on your shots:
#1 I also see what Rafa meant by pole jungle or forest. It's hard to lock onto something in particular. That being said, just to see what I would have gotten I might have taken the shot from a lower dock and tilted up to make the boat masts appear much like trees in a forest would look like from the same height and angle. Not sure if that makes sense to anyone. Of course it means excluding the water but hey it's all about experimenting right?
#2 I agree with Rafa completely.
#3 Nice and moody. Once again I agree with Rafa completely.
#4 Very nice I would have taken a step or two to the right to frame in as much of the boat bays on that side as yoo did on the left side. I would have taken it portrait as well.
#5 Crop the grill and level it out and yoo kind of get a lonely deserted bench.
#6 Too hot. Reset the white balance. The shutter appears to set right for the nice dreamy waterfall but it really is kinda hard to make out.

Anyhoo that's my take on them. Keep havin' fun. And we look forward to seeing more.

Which reminds me I haven't posted anything here in months because video rules my world

Thanks Lufaine I appreciate it. I am really looking forward for all your thoughts and thank you all for being helpful. Your opinions just making me more eager to learn. I will try to reshoot the picture once stop raining in Seattle hopefully this weekend and apply your tip.

Rafa I also have a generic wireless shutter release made by yungnoo? That what I used lastnight when I took a picture of our porch and pond. BTW I was amazed when I used my tripod getting those shots also, first tried holding the camera then all is blurred then I thought of using the tripod that made a big difference but I used the wireless remote shutter I wonder if I will get a camera shake by pressing the shutter in the camera itself while in the tripod. Thanks again guys for everything.

Peter

Peter, if you want to eliminate camera shake, you should use live view or the mirror lock up fonction. You can look for it, it's in the manual, in the custom fonction settings. (I know Rafa gives the page number, but eh :p)

Also, having a sturdy tripod and remote shutter release will help by a lot.

Thanks Rivest I will look into that. I should bring the manual at work and read it during my break....:)

Northern Saskatchewan, Canada. Love it up here right now. Snow is still falling heavily and it is beautiful out. Too bad I don't have a snowmobile yet... keep spending my savings on camera equipment.

...I know which direction Rafa will lean on that one ;)

Actually, I was equally torn between the 17-55 or the 70-200. Even more so, since most of my shots will actually be between 17 and 55, I first decided on the 17-55!!! The thing is, I have that range already covered with the kit lens, while I had no other way of producing the 70-200 range (or the 55-250, I was still undecided)... so while my main lens will, eventually, be the 17-55, I went with the 70-200 first just to have that range :)

Sounds a bit crazy, but that's how it went. Oh, and I was decided on the 70-200 f4 IS, but a cousin convinced me that for the extra $500 ~ $600 worth of IS, that money was wiser spent on the one that would be the most used lens.

That said, each time I look at the 15-85 I think if, for the reach, that is the wiser choice over the 17-55 (but 2.8 is just SOOO tempting!!! :( ). Luckily, I have no way of buying either lens right now, so I have some time to think about it :)

Rafa.

Still, stuff like this:

Yahoo, did you go for the 'cool' white balance on purpose? I love the pictures and their composition, they even have a great mood with that off-blue white balance... just wondering if it was intentional or just a fluke?

Most definitely Peter you'll get camera shake unless you have a stone-sturdy tripod! Even with one as strong, you will probably need to force the locks too much.

Mirror lock rises the mirror first (on one shutter press) and then then takes the picture on a second shutter press. The shake you introduce by pressing the shutter is much more pronounced than the one you'll get by the mirror going up. A remote shutter, either wired or wireless, is the perfect solution!

Another option if you don't want to shoot remote is to set the 2 second timer, in that way, the camera has time to stabilize between the moment you press the shutter button and the moment the picture is taken. All that is avoided with the remote shutter and you can take pictures more rapidly and at the moment you want them to (for instance, a bird just entered your shot, or a plane is about to come into frame).

I only use my remote shutter now (house made, I'll take pictures of it) and its much better than any other option.

Rafa.

If anyone else is looking for a wireless remote... I got mine from Meritline for $1.49 shipped. Works great with my T2i for what I need. They run specials and coupons from time to time; only downside is that they take 1-2 weeks to get to you since they're shipped from Singapore.

Is it possible you have the Infrared remote control? I have one of these and like it a lot. They are super cheap and work well, but can only be used from in front of the camera and you need to be fairly close (5M or so). The wireless can be triggered from anywhere, even through obstacles, and claim to work from 100M and so are considerably more expensive (although much cheaper than the official brand ones).

Al, which are these? Can you post a link to any of them, I was under the impression that all were infrared... but reading your post it seems I'm quite wrong.

Thanks,
Rafa.

No, I believe what they call "wireless" uses more of a radio signal. It has to have two parts: one plugs into the side of the camera (and then the "receiver" part can slide into the hotshoe) and the other is the wireless trigger, that usually has an actual antennae. The IR style (infrared) is just a little wafer of a remote that emits a beam that a sensor on the front of the camera responds to. Here is an ebay to a web page that shows the wireless kind with lots of pictures. (I don't have one of these, so this isn't an endorsement! I just don't want to take pictures:oops:)
