Ok. Here is a landscape photo you can use for a more direct comparison. This was at 55mm shooting a farm about 500 yards away at ISO 100, 1/250 shutter, f/10. This is a 100% crop out of an unedited photo right from the camera:

Thanks for doing that.
That's a lot sharper than the images I'm getting.
Can I ask a couple of questions:

a) What lens did you use?
b) Where is the AF point on that photo roughly?

I thought this was the kit lens, but I'm not sure that it was based on the exif. I think this was my old 28-105mm Canon lens. It's not a fancy lens by any means and I've found the image quality between that and the 18-55 nearly identical.

The AF should have been on the tree line right about the center of the image. No custom AF point selected or anything. In fact, it was simply shot in the Landscape program mode point and shoot style.

Ok thanks, that only reinforces the fact that I must have a problem here.
I'll call the shop again tomorrow.

Shooting indoors is the worst! I finally broke down and got a flash I could bounce off the ceiling. Wait until you can go outdoors and shoot in good light. If you are NOT doing post-processing at home, you might want to shoot Jpegs and go ahead and let the camera do the work (e.g. set the settings to apply sharpening, contrast, etc.) and see what that does for you.

Mookalafalas,

loved your temple party shots. Great stuff there.

I'm looking for harsh criticism of my photos - tell me how to improve, I will be grateful.

I bought the 430 EX II this Tuesday and am quite happy with it so far.

I didn't get to go do any shooting today, but I took just a few around the house to check out the new 70-200mm. I think I'm gonna be happy with it! Rafa, you had asked how much I got it for, but this thread has really taken off the last few days, and I lost track of your post of questions hahah. I payed $475 shipped, and I'm happy. It's in excellent condition and came with box, hood, bag, and tripod ring.

Great price Wolfy and even better shots! Really like the first one. So crisp and perfectly exposed! Well done!

Great shots Wolfy... the sharpness of the lens and the thin DOF usually makes the pictures pop like few others! There are other things one notice less, but color rendition and contrast is another thing I can see a clear difference when putting samples of the 70-200 and the 18-55 side by side! :)

It appears that after a long period of cloudy and dull days, things are starting to get better! This is today's sunset at my 'golden hall' :) (hope there some LOTR fans here, otherwise, we are doomed :) ) :

Hope you like it... I put to practice what I was suggesting earlier: this is a stack of two pictures, one 4 minute exposure and one 8 minute exposure... both with f16, ISO 100 and 3 stop ND filter. I love how colors get saturated with the ND filters!!!

Rafa.

Wow, nice shot Rafa! And yes, even though my wife cringes, I re-inact a lot of middle earth scenes.
