Thanks for the quick response Rafa. I will continue to look around. Not sure if I'm going to go new or used. I saw a pretty good deal for the T2i with 2 lenses for 860. The lenses are EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens and Canon EF-S 55-250mm.

I dont know if i mentioned this in my previous post but I've never even used a SLR camera before so I'm thinking this will be a good starter setup.

Canon has a refurb deal going on with both those lenses... $709!!!!!!

I just received my T2i in the mail today from Amazon, and although I've only taken three pictures and a ten-second video, my mind is blown (coming from the Rebel XS).

The higher-ability ISO is the real deal. I took a couple pictured by firelight that wouldn't be possible with the XS.

I'm impressed. And the sreen! Dang, that's a bright little thing.

No, it is an illusion, remember evil's comments in your other thread? There has been no improvements in the high ISO performance of these latter cameras as compared to the XTi due to the lost DR and other tricks they are pulling. :)

Wow that's a great deal! Definitely worth looking into for those who don't already own the camera!

I don't really care what "tricks" they need to "pull" to accomplish it, but the ISO is truly outstanding! This thread is a testament to that fact. ;)

I suggest that the discussion of this belongs in a separate thread.

Hi guys

just got came back from the store with my new 550D. I have to say, I've read the whole thread (took a few days) and I'm very impressed with everybody's posts. Can't wait to take some shots and start posting here. Just have the kit lens for the moment as it is my first DSLR, but already thinking of investing in a wide angle.

Regards

Pete

Hey Pete,

Congratulations and welcome! I think you'll enjoy the T2i in a big way, I bought mine earlier this year and couldn't be happier. It's a DSLR with amazing capabilities!

Hey guys - Quick question - What is the difference between a IS and non IS lens?

Take your pick:

  1. One has IS, the other doesn't
  2. About $600 (70-200 f4)
  3. About 3 stops of hand-holdable shutter speed

In basic, a lens with IS has a built in system to help control camera shake allowing you to take handheld pictures at lower shutterspeeds. NON IS is just the opposite. A lot of people either love or hate IS. I hear it's not good for sports or action photography, but I only have limited experience using IS. In certain situations, it could be invaluable!

Here's MY experience with ISO on the T2i:

The camera arrived in the mail yesterday, was charged, and I took three pictures by firelight, something my XS couldn't handle.

Then today the real test came. I teach at an elementary school, and our cafeteria/auditorium is horribly lit. Today the students did poetry recitation up on the stage with kids and parents in attendance.

Normally it's a bear to get anything decent using my XS and the 55-250 in the school auditorium, and I am the school photographer. I take pictures of all the programs and such. That lens, of course, isn't known for being a low-light lens, but that's what I have for now.

This new T2i is blowing my mind. I shot at 3200 ISO and got great pictures. I'll post later when I get home (my work computer blocks Smugmug). I am very impressed.

If someone wants to say that the T2i doesn't have better ISO performance than the XS they are welcome to continue thinking that. They can even be right and I might be in la-la land.

I like la-la land.

Thank you. bw!
