ok, I've got my helmet on and ready to get hammered, but has anyone heard anything about the Sony SLT-A55V? I'm a noob and have been watching this forum for awhile now, and based on what I've read/seen here was ready to pull the trigger on a T2i once the bonus money rolls around. When I went down to the local photography store and was asking some questions about the T2i one of the guys showed me the A55. The specs on it seem pretty impressive but I'm a little concerned about not going with Cannon or Nikon. I'm new to the SLR/SLT world and I was looking for some "non salesman" perspectives. I'm sure they'll be somewhat slanted :) but just curious if anyone has heard anything one way or the other....thanks

Thanks for the compliments! That's my sharpest pan shot to date. I would have loved to shoot it from a lower angle, but didn't think it'd be as sharp as it is. Congratulations on getting the camera jonnythan and davidc502. Can't wait to see some shots!

so the shots with the 18-55, where those normal AF shots or did you use "special" settings.. looks like the ocean one was a timed elapse? Still waiting for my camera to arrive.. Can't wait to start taking photos like these!

The rocks on the beach was a 20 second exposure in very low light. I want to shoot this over one again sometime to get it sharper and better composed.

To be honest, it's cropped pretty tight from the original. I was really trying for a completely different subject on this one. It didn't work, but I lucked out with the rocks :)

I read a magazine (here in the UK) recently that reviewed that Sony. I think that's the one with 8 frames per second.
The main disappointment with the camera was that probably its biggest selling point is that 8 fps speed but in reality it doesn't actually work because the autofocus can't keep up with it.

It's a feature-rich camera but you don't get the range of lenses with Sony that you do with Canon or Nikon.
My two cents anyway.

Wow, look at that. A hotel room that actually has thermostat and light controls, as well as power sockets, available within arm's reach of the bed. Why can't American hotels figure this out?

The last hotel I stayed in had a thermostat on the Wall! Yes, on the wall! The heat and air conditioning was still in the window, but the thermostat was on the wall!

I'm spoiling myself just thinking about it. ;)

wow.. lightroom looks great.. and being that I am going back for my masters, I'm currently a student.. The student pricing is much nicer.. Any reason why I would want to pay the retail over student? does any use the student version?

There's no difference between student and regular versions other than pricing and details in the licensing fine print. If you can get it as a student, do it!

I'm a lightroom fanboy myself. I've used photoshop for 12 years, but once I set up LR I haven't looked back. It's just a great piece of software made specifically for photographers.

I don't understand that.
Lightroom is a different type of Photoshop. If Photoshop isn't designed for photographers then who is it designed for?

Yep. That's my background in it. I went to college for landscape architecture and we used photoshop for everything except photo editing.

While Lightroom essentially has the same photo manipulation features as photoshop, the interface and workflow makes it 100 times better for actually maintaining and editing a massive photo collection. If lightroom raised the price to $1,000 I'd still buy it in a second just so I can work in that GUI. Of course, I'd still need PS because there's no getting around the fact that there are some powerful features not found in LR.

This is an odd place to be asking this question, don't you think:) Anyway, I think Inchpractice has hit it well. It looks like a really sweet camera for the most part. To lure customers away from Nikon and Canon, Sony makes competitively featured cameras with in-body stabilization, which I would give an arm and a leg to have in my T2i...every lens you put in becomes stabilized, even legacy Minolta glass. You can get good 3rd party lenses from Tamron, Tokina, and Sigma, and Zeiss makes some lenses for them, but it's still not that large a selection and not as readily available as Canon's. Sony's Wide angle and long lenses just aren't very good, and the kit lens that comes with the camera is much worse than the canon kit lenses.
Now go find a Sony thread to chat on!
