Yeah, just different types of shooting I guess. At least for the time being, the only thing worth shooting around here are landscapes and still life with the occasional evenings chasing the kids around trying to get a few snapshots. But I'm not outside walking the streets or going to any events or anything. I'm sure once it warms up outside and I'm out and about more that will change.

Don't bring your 55-250, it'll be useles. Kit lens and 50mm 1.8 will be enough.

I really recommend you try your nifty out there with the settings that will give you shutter speed around 1/100. You might not have good lightning so I you will probably end up shooting almost wide open.

Don't fear of raising your iso, a noisy picture is better than a blurry one.

Oh and have fun!

thanks guys!

Friends,

I hate missing all the nice things here! I like to welcome all the newcomers and congratulate everyone on the great pictures!

davidc502, I believe you have a fantastic looking set of fire/matches going on! I love the texture on the matches heads in every picture! Thanks for sharing.

Marubozo, I'm sorry I'm so late in posting this: Your panorama with the white lines showing is the result of PSs scaling down algorithms. The reduction process blurs a bit the endings of each layer, and, since they are perfectly cut out one against the other, the background starts to show. The solution is to FLATTEN the image (Layers -> Flatten Image) BEFORE doing the resizing!

Of course, save the work before doing that and don't over-write the layered pano as it is useful for many other things! Hope this helps a bit.

Rafa.

Thanks for the complements. I've been working hard to get an acceptable combination of match-stick and flame.

Looks like the PC has caught a virus. Antivirus caught a trojan trying to do its thing. Fortunately, I was able to remove it, but my PC is blue-screening a lot.

Looks like I will be doing a re-install this weekend. I have better things to do with my time.

I've always liked these type of shots. Now you get to see the amazing set up (sarcasm) to get this silly little match and fire shot! Look at what is holding up the match; a pair of tongs held together with a Pringles Can! lol Crazy?

Picture taken with my iphone4. It is funny how I thought the iphone took good pictures before I bought the T2i. What the hell was I thinking?

David, put a light behind the construction paper book facing the camera to back light the smoke. Make sure you use a lens hood or flag the camera to avoid flare.
Trust me on this, I have quite a bit of experience with smoke shots.

It's taking me a long time to go through all 390 pics i took yesterday. So far I've managed to cull it down to 255 and have uploaded around 25 to flickr Hwaseong Fortress Set (external link). For some reason lightroom created two sets with the same name on flickr but only one within lightroom so three pics are in another set. Will fix that up once I've finished going through the remaining pics.

Also not sure how many is okay to post to this thread at one time, so I'll limit myself to 5 for now and then maybe another 5 tomorrow. For the record all photos were taken with my Tamron 10-24

Ok, after seeing the match pictures with a nice black background I got off my butt and did some work today. I made myself a little portable studio. It was incredibly simple to build. I simply bought 20 feet of PVC tubing, two tees, and two 90 degree elbows. Grand total was something like $5.79. Then I went to the fabric store and got a few yards of velvet, which lucky for me happened to be on sale for 50% off so it was $15/yard so I picked up 3 yards. I already had the clamps and the light out in the garage, so that's it. Now I can simply interchange backdrops by using a white sheet, the velvet, or anything else I may pick up. The PVC frame is nearly 6 feet tall so I can use it as a tabletop setup like I have here, or remove the table and shoot tall objects or even use it for taking pictures of the kids.

I also picked up a couple pieces of white foamcore for bouncing light, and I just need to get something to put over the lamp to diffuse the light and I'll be all set. Well, I probably should pick up another one of those lamps to add to the other side, but this will do for now.

And here's a quick and dirty test product type shot.

No more rainy/snowy days are going to keep me from finding things to shoot. :D

sorry for the late reply. I love that simple setup and the black background over white (each has its place)

I think you could improve the setup by adding a piece of glass on the bottom. That will give a nice reflection and add a nice glassy effect for lack of a better word.

My buddy who went with me just posted his pics to Flickr also and I thought I'd share a couple of pics of me.

Here I am reaching through the Arrow Hole to get a shot of the outside of the wall from up high. More importantly you can see my kata bag and manfrotto tripod.

Yes speaking of the tripod, which model is that? I need to be able to get a worm's eye view sometimes and that looks like it would do it. You should be proud of your gear and list it in your signature. Give up the info Sean :)
