Going to have 10 million questions.. in fact already do.. but after many of my friends have just told me to CHILL (I get very excited), will save it for when I get my camera.

Sean, that's a great bunch of pictures! Thanks for the pictures from your friend, too. The gear and tri-pod setup are interesting to see (for me, at least). I have a tri-pod that does goes low like that, but I've never even used the feature. In fact, I haven't used the tri-pod since July, I think:o

You are just going to love what the T2i brings to the table; shots crystal clear and poping with color! Get excited! Cause you are about to enter the world of Canon photography!

But in the meantime, since your still a noob, hazing is in effect!
For starters, I want pictures of some elephant dung. Now get going!

P.S. Bonus points if you can get the shot of the Dung Beetle, rolling balls!

so.. I am sure this has been asked many times but I keep reading reviews and I am a little lost as to what to do. I ordered the T2i (which is on back order at my local store). While waiting I have been reading the differences between T2i and 60D. In your professional opinion, is it worth making the extra investment for the 60D over the T2i? When would one choose one over the other? Thanks!

It's all a matter of personal use and preference. I personally wouldn't get the 60D because if I wanted to put more money into a body I would want it to be weather sealed or else I wouldn't be seeing any real value.

It was t2i or 7D IMHO, but I know there are days I was swearing about not having the flip out display saving my back and knees.

I opted for T2i as a transition to DSLRs with the plan to get the next gen 7D or 5D when it is available. Or maybe a Red Scarlet if it ever becomes available. But I come from a video background.

Some comparisons are the following.

60D has a flip LCD
60D has 5.3 shots per second compared to 3.4 with T2i
60D has a wheel on the back to be used with your thumb I.E. Shutter speed, apature etc.
60D has a larger image buffer than T2i, probably about twice the size. This means you can take more consecutive shots before the images have to be transfered to the memory card.

The image quality from both cameras will be the same (virtually).

These are just some of the feature enhancements on the 60D. You just need to decide if they are important to you.

When I was in the market, I compared the two, and the price difference between the two wasn't worth what extras you get. Having said that, the next person may not be able live with out those upgrades, and are more than willing to pay the extra $$.

My plan is to use the cost savings to help me afford the type of lens I want/need. It has been explained many times on this forum, the most important part of the camera is the glass that transfers those scenes to your sensor, and not neccessarily the body.

David

Sorry to be pedantic but it's 3.7.

Life-changing information I know.

Anyway as far as upgrades go I always say that there's no point in upgrading to a better camera unless it is no longer capable of doing what you want it to do.
This is a very rare situation with a camera as high spec as the 550d but if you decided you wanted to be a sports photographer and needed more frames per second then you have no choice but to upgrade.
If you can't possibly live without a flip screen then get the 60D, otherwise save your money.

Babelfish we need to know more about you to answer the question properly. Is this your first ever DSLR or is it an upgrade? What type of photography will you mainly be shooting etc. etc?

Speaking about glass, I'm thinking of doing a comparison between two lenses.

Maybe something like this..... Compare the 50mm 1.4 vs. 50mm setting on the 35-135mm Zoom.

Would the trick be comparing apples to apples? I could set both apatures to 5.6, and keep the ISO and Shutter speed the same?

Good comparison?

This will be my first DSLR. I plan to shoot the family... (Any other forum and that statement would get be arrested. lol) My only main reason for considering the 60D is that the T2i is still on back order but they do have 60D in stock (from what I can tell). I guess the waiting is starting me to second guess my decision. I got a really good deal though. The store basically matched the deal costco was selling. T2i kit + rebel bag + 55-250mm + canon hdmi + 4g SD for basically the cost of the camera. I then swapped out the 55-250 for the Tamron 18-270 for a little more.

Check out how this guy compared the canon 28mm f/1.8 and the sigma 30mm f/1.4: http://www.focalplane.net/canon28sigma30/ (external link)

It will give you an idea, but yes, put both lenses on the same settings and then take a shot of a still subject at the same settings with each across the aperture range and then do some 100% crops at both the center and edges of the shots and compare them side by side. That should give you a pretty good idea of the image quality between the two.

If this is your first DSLR then you are starting with a camera that's far higher quality than you actually need it to be when starting out.
I'm not saying don't buy it, not at all but I'm saying that the 60D seems like a bit of a pointless upgrade when you haven't got to grips with the 550D yet.

Save your money for better lenses.
Money spent on better lenses makes much more of a difference to your image quality than a slight upgrade in the body.
Some people also find that the extra features added to more expensive cameras sound great but they never end up actually using them.
You'll love this camera and you won't need to upgrade for years imo.

By the way, the package you've bought sounds great but you will probably need a larger memory card than that, especially if you're planning on using the video function on this camera.
Bear in mind that when shooting in RAW, images can be between 25MB and 29MB in size.
The last holiday I went on was 2 weeks long and I shot 30gb of photos.

Hey guys ... had a "Tamron 60mm f/2 Macro" on my 550D today. What a great lens!!! I guess I'll swap my 50mm 1.4 and my 60mm 2.8 Macro for this one. Such a great combination of both.

Unfortunately the copy I tested had a faulty focusmotor :-/

I'm a video guy too and the Scarlet was going to be my HD solution. I don't know what I was gonna do with so much resolution 3K, 4K  .

Seriously though Red took too long and Canon released the 7d and the T2i just in time and hurt Red a lot. Thinking about it now though the resources necessary to deal with 3K and 4K footage would have been pretty intense (new editing computer at the least) and the workflow would be new and alien to me.

So I'm really happy to have the T2i as my introduction to dealing with an HD video workflow.

Wow, I'm amazed that a Tamron with a faulty focus motor was better than that EF-S 60mm 2.8 because that is a seriously sharp lens!

thanks for your input.. I was planning on getting a larger SD card as soon as it came in. I guess I will just continue to wait for it to come in.. Waiting sucks lol
