So I've had my Tamron 17-50 for a few weeks now and it has officially become my go to lens. It's awesome for portraits, walk around, and is wide enough for some landscapes or architecture shots. I really wish I had known about this lens when I bought my camera because I wouldn't have bought the two lens' I did buy (nifty fifty and 28-105 f3.5/4.5).

I'm actually seriously considering selling both lens' - the extra speed on the 50 is nice, but I haven't even put it on the camera since then and have done several portraits at 50mm and f2.8 that I'm really happy with. The only reason I keep the other lens is that there is a small chance that I'll need something longer for some reason.

My next lens is likely to be a prime in the 80-110 range with macro and when I buy that I'll most likely sell the above two lens'

I'm looking for harsh criticism of my photos - tell me how to improve, I will be grateful.

BTW, just sold my Tamron 17-50 a couple of hours ago.

Really? Here? Why? You really love that lens... what are you replacing it with on the T2i? Or are you dropping the crop line-up all together?

Oh, and by the way... you did NOT just throw another option at me on the night I was supposed to purchase my gear after PMing with you for a week on this issue... did you?? :D

Thanks, I'll look into the Sigma, but I'm running out of time to get the thing delivered on time to be brought back to me.

Rafa.

I didn't post that to recommend the sigma...just as more data to throw into the grist mill of the decision making process:evil:
I felt guilty afterwards, honestly. It was my mischievous streak getting the best of me. It is an informative thread, though (and others like them which I suspect you read a lot of) because it is mostly owners talking about the 17-55. Actually, almost the whole thread consists of happy owners rushing to defend their lens, which they feel has been maligned. That's a good vote of confidence for the 17-55! Of course Lightrules chooses the Sigma after making the argument that he knows more than anyone else, but I have doubts about him: He says the Tamron Non-VC is optically just as good as the VC, and lots of evidence suggests it really isn't (although the difference is not THAT significant).

It is life telling you to get the 24-105 f/4L IS ...Rafa, you have the 70-200 f/4 L (IS, not sure) right? The guy I met was using it for portraits (with a 50D) and it was an exceptional lens. It is definitely on my list.

Lost, I'm seriously considering the 24-105 as it is the least expensive alternative (of the two), even if I go for new one, and have a one in the Market Place in negotiations... lets see! :)

Lots of us here have the 70-200 f4L, and most of us have the NON IS version! It is THE cheapest L lens in the whole Canon lineup, it is still current, you can buy it used here for $500, and it is a FANTASTIC! lens... Portraits are incredible with it. All my hawk/eagle series were done with it, and they were good portraits IMHO (although not from people! :) ).

The 70-200 lens archive thread has a couple of my portraits indoor and with available light, handheld at 1/100th. Here are some of mine:
https://photography-on-the.net …p=11753850&postcount=3433

Al has lots of contributions there as well. It is a truly spectacular! Lens.

You can't go wrong with it, and its hard to justify the premium price of its more expensive brothers for what it can already do at $600 or so.

Rafa.

Al, I was just joking, you know you have been extremely helpful in this whole process.

But, please comment on the 17-50... what happened? What are your goals with the sell? We are eager to know (I am at any rate :) )

Rafa.

I accidentally posted above when I didn't mean to (I sometimes hit "submit reply" when I mean to hit "advanced" to put in an emoticon) so have some answer/apology above...
I loved the tamron, but, yeah, do want to keep stuff I can use on a crop or ff. I spent too much money already, and still want to try some other lenses, so let it go. Actually, my tamron 28-75 is almost exactly the same coverage on the FF, so the 17-50 was just an extra lens, in a way. I have a $57 wide angle lens on the way, and if I just can't make it do, then I will put the money from selling the Tam and 55-250 into a canon 17-40. Actually, though, I still owe my credit card for the 5D, so need to start catching up!

Canon have apparently just released a new camera that's very similar to ours but with a few added extras:

EOS 600D and EF-S 18-55mm lens

Canon has launched the EOS 600D – a compact, lightweight digital SLR. The camera sits at the top of Canon’s entry-level EOS line-up, above the existing EOS 550D and the new EOS 1100D.

The EOS 600D provides all the tools to capture stills and HD movies. Picture detail is provided by a high-resolution 18 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor which combines with 14-bit DIGIC 4 processing to capture smooth gradients between colours. The camera’s low light shooting capability allows clear, natural images in darker conditions, with an ISO range of 100-6400 that can be further expanded to 12800.

The EOS 600D allows high-speed shooting at 3.7 frames per second. The 9-point autofocus system can track subjects using the autofocus points across the frame. Even more accurate focusing is providing by an extra-sensitive central AF Sensor, while the iFCL Metering system from the semi-professional EOS 7D features a 63-zone dual-layer metering sensor, helping to ensure that each shot is correctly exposed, even in difficult lighting conditions.

Scene Intelligent Auto analyses the scene and automatically picks the best settings to capture it. A new ‘Auto’ Picture Stylemakes fine adjustments to colours. Basic + settings change the mood to one of eight options, including ‘Warm’, ‘Cool’ or ‘Intense’.

Ideal for beginners, a Feature Guide has been added to the EOS 600D’s menu system, offering a brief description of each key setting and its effect.

A Vari-angle 7.7cm (3-inch) 3:2 ratio ClearView LCD enables overhead or ground-level shooting. Rich on-screen detail is provided in 1.04 million-dot resolution and the side-mounted hinge allows users to comfortably and creatively shoot from a range of unusual angles, or when using a tripod. A smudge-resistant fluorine coating and three anti-reflection coatings also ensures clear detail in a wide range of situations.

The EOS 600D offers several Creative Filters. Fish-eye-Effect creates a barrel-shaped distortion similar to a fish-eye lens, and you can instantly turn a scene into a small-scale model with Miniature Effect. Toy Camera Effect, Grainy B/W and Soft Focus offer additional options.

EOS movie mode
The EOS 60D includes a Full HD (1080p) movie mode, while a dedicated movie shooting mode means you can switch between stills and HD video instantly. Distant subjects can be reached using a new Movie Digital Zoom function which crops the centre of the sensor from 3x to 10x while still maintaining Full HD quality.

Video Snapshot mode shoots video in two, four, or eight second segments, creating clips that are short, easy to edit and of similar lengths to clips used in most TV programmes. As they are recorded, the clips are saved to a Video Snapshot Album and combined into one movie. A soundtrack can be added by choosing from tracks uploaded to the camera and the result viewed on the camera’s LCD, or on an HDTV via the built-in mini HDMI connection.

New EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II
Launching with the EOS 600D is the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II – a new kit lens that provides excellent performance for beginners. A lightweight construction makes it easy to carry; optical Image Stabilization allows photographers to use shutter speeds 4 stops slower while still maintaining a blur-free shot. The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II will succeed the existing EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS in Canon’s lens line-up.

Pricing and availability
• The EOS 600D (body only): £679.00/€819.00 RRP incl. VAT.
• The EOS 600D with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II: £769.00/€929.00 RRP incl. VAT.
The EOS 600D with EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS: £949.00/€1,149.00 RRP incl. VAT.
All available from early April 2011.

Apart from the flip screen, the fisheye effects and the new lens I can't see much of a difference really...

Anybody have any good comparison of the Sigma 18-50mm stacks up against the 17s? I know it's really not in the same class but at half to a third of the price, I'm curious how the quality compares...

@inch it's considered a complimentary model, not a replacement, its upgrades are video oriented, photo wise, it isn't much different. More video options/features/controls.

I feel like the miniature effects and similar just limit your options and control. You can do all that in post and preserve the footage original quality.

Example:
http://vimeo.com/18662163 (external link)
I shot that on my T2i using video (intersection) and a series of long exposure photos (freeway). I was able to speed up the video and create the tilt shift effect in post giving me much more precision.

I dunno, I feel like the fake in-camera tilt shift is a Point and Shoot type feature, I know a couple P&S models that have it.

Just my opinion, I can see it has applications, but it's like shooting in JPEG instead of RAW, you loose some control and capabilities of your footage.

That's a great portrait. I love the tones and the contrasts, esp. between the sharpness and blurred portions; the way the edge of the hood is so clear and then gives right onto the receding blur in the background...really nice.

BTW, Sean, I'm really happy you like the Tamron so much. I agree with your idea of getting the longer prime, too. I think you can't go wrong in that range; several companies make them (sigma, canon, tamron) and they all have lots of fans. I was kind of an idiot. I bought a Tamron 90 for macro, and planned to double it as a portrait lens...and then loved its portrait power so much that I felt I had to have a dedicated portrait lens and so got the Sigma 85. I really don't need both, but like them so much I doubt I'll be able to part with either. People who get the canon 85 1.8 and the 100mm macro generally seem to become almost rabid fans of those lenses as well. I think you can't go wrong in that range.
