Grey and clear color in a piece of glass put in front of your lense by using an adapter. Exactly what I did. I had the 17-55IS but traded it for a 24-105L simply because I was at the long end of the 17-55 90% of the time. Yes 17-55 is killer on crop I agree but 17-24mm was wasted FL for me as I rarely go below 24mm. I then had to change my lens setup from 17-55/70-200/50 1.4 to now trying to get 24-105/70-200 for general zoom and wither 28/85 primes also for lowlight. The other option you got is the 28 f/1.8. Good for lowlight and gives you a 44.8mm prespective on crop. There is also the 35 f/2 which is a good lens. I traded my 50 1.4 for an 85 1.8 because the FL did not fit me. All in all it just depends on what you need for FL and and your budget. Hope this helps.
