Does anyone have any recommendation for a "Duplicate File Finder" program ?

I've found (downloaded / installed /tried) several (dozen  !! ) of them, but I have just the one specific requirement .......

I have two different (folders / drives) places where I know there are heaps of duplicate files, but I always want them deleted from SAME THE ONE PLACE.

Example........

C:\Images\Processed\Dog\MyDog\Fido.jpg

D:\RawFiles\_MG_7753.JPG

I want to delete the file _MG_7753.JPG because it is on the D: drive.

I have no trouble FINDING that these two are the same file, but I have yet to find a program where as part of the search criteria I can tell it to "Always select files on the D: drive to delete .

I seem to be able to select by just about every other criteria, just not location !!

Any thoughts ??

Thanks,

Austen.

I used to use this little program called JV16 PowerTools (link (external link)) and it did just that. Once installed, go to "File Tools" check "Find only duplicate files", Source drive/directory then put in your search term (ex. *.jpg) and it will search quickly for duplicate files. It will look at name as well as size but not within the files themselves. So, if two files have the same name but are not the same size, then it will skip them. If the files are named the same, are the same size (unlikely) but are actually different files then it will think they are the same files, but what are the chances of that?

If you have anything but XP, DO NOT use the registry cleanup tool. It will kill some programs like Office 2003 and greater by deleting the license link in the registry. Otherwise, it completely safe. Hope that helps.

Use a CRC program. If two files are the same type and size, and have the same CRC, there's a very, very, very high chance they the same. I like to use my circa 2000 crc checker with excel, which lets me sort things better than the program did

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Thanks MaxxuM, I'll give that program a try .............

Thanks basroil, That is NOT what I'm after....Finding the duplicate files is the easy part, having the program automatically select the ones to delete is that part I'm having issues with !!!

I searched sourceforge and found this....

Yet Another Duplicate File Remover (beta) (external link)

i just tried it and it's pretty solid. i deleted 800 files.

you go through a wizard where you select file types, add file types, and where to search.

then you select to sort the results by name, which will also sort the results by drive letter. shift then select the files you want, then right click and select "check selected" then "delete checked".

you then right click and select "check selected" then "delete checked"

hope this is what you're looking for.

ps: be sure not to "select/check all"! this will delete all files!

@Maxxum......You're right, it looks like JV16 can do serious damage to your system, I try to stay away from those sorts of programs if at all possible :D !!

@Fahad79.....Ohhh.......That looks like a good find ! I d/loaded it and installed it and gave it one single folder to look at, and when it came up with the list of duplicates it does indeed as though you can just sort the locations as you can with a standard Windows Explorer-type folder.

It's 1.40am here now, I'll have a good look at that program in the morning and report back here !

Thanks guys,

Austen.

give VisiPics (external link)a try. I've run it in conjunction with Auslogics Duplicate file Finder (which is pretty bare bones) to process about 80gb of overlapping image directories.

Runs on ImageMagick libraries, and is donation-ware. Supports JPEG, RAW and many other formats, one of the neatest things about it is the ability to load a dataset, and then run multiple search parameters on it, with a variable (strict to loose) matching algorithm.

As for what you need, setting the D drive folder as secondary (least preferred) and then using auto-mark would accomplish what you need.

According to me Duplicate Files Deleter is the best because it is user friendly and you can do anything with it & I would definitely recommend it to you (5 out of 5 stars)

Original thread is 6 years old so hopefully the OP has worked out his need. Additionally, the last post from the OP is from about 3 years ago.
