Going to Extreme Lengths

Having recently acquired a 2X extender to go with the 1.4 I wondered what it would be like with both of them added to the Sigma 150-500. So that takes it to 1400mm. A very shallow DOF and focussing needs care, but whilst not stellar images, it is certainly feasible if there is no other way of gettingthe shot. It needs plenty of light and an odd thing I noticed is that it only reports the 2X for both distance and f stop.

That's pretty good Ken. If I have plenty of light and use my tripod I can get good images
with my 2x. You can really see the difference in those boxes can't you?

Wow, that's impressive. With a 2x extender you loose AF, right?

It's interesting that in image 1 there is a lot of noise, but image 2 is much better. Different aperature value?

Interesting test. I've tried my 1.5 + my 1.4 with so-so results. Maybe it's time to try again.

I was never Impressed with my Canon 2.0 TC but these make me think to try it again!!

Quite impressive Ken. Knowing what you have done before you can see the loss of detail in the first image compared to a shot taken closer without the extenders. But even so, if there was no other way this configuration would work to give you a decent image.

Which Extenders are you using? You know I have a Bigma, and the Sigma 1.4x, but that will not fit on the lens at 50mm. Dows your 1.4x fit on yours?

Yes both the 1.4 and the 2X fit the 150-500 without a problem. Will it fit the 50-500 if you extend it a bit?

It will, but even on the Mk3, it looses AF. I had the Bigma and this same 1.4x back when I bought a 1D Classic and it kept AF perfectly. It also changes the AF point from center to the one above center for some reason. Some sort of software conflict. I just think it's kind of cheezy that Sigma makes a 1.4x that won't fit one of their "popular" lenses.
