Hi all,

I've recently bought a 50mm 1.4 for some portrait work. I used to use my 60mm macro for some portrait as well as macro, but after buying the 50mm I am now considering selling the 60mm macro to buy the 100mm macro (not the L). There isn't a huge amount of price difference (less than £200-00 after selling in the UK). Do you think it's worth changing? The 100 will give me more options for portrait I think too...but would really appreciate some advice? Will still want a macro though!

Cheers

David

I have both the 60mm and the 100mm (non IS) macros. Sure, sell the 60mm if you have a 50mm, but I would suggest getiing a used non IS 100mm macro. I have never found the need for IS for non macro shooting. With the use of a monopod, macro shots come out perfect. If you're wealthy and want the new IS version, its a great lens and you'll love it, but I can verify that the old version has that same great IQ as the 60mm 2.8.

I would do it. The 100mm gives you more range to work with and is a great lens. The 60mm is nice as well, but with the 50mm in your bag, the 100mm will give you more options.

Thanks for the advice Eco and Nightcat; looks like that's what I'll be doing!

Hi David, I love my 100mm IS. But even on a crop body, I can't seem to get close enough to insects out in the open with that 100mm. So yes, I think trading your 60 for a 100 is a good idea. In fact for shots of bees, I have had to use a 300mm :-)

Here is 1 of my bee photos using the 300.

I love my 100 for non marco work. Before I had my 24-70L it was on my camera 95% of the time even when I was walking around.
