Just got my new camera, and I think there's a dead pixel on the sensor.

Brand new 7D, received it yesterday (from B&H). One of the first shots I reviewed I noticed a pixel that was completely white and shouldn't be there. I was hoping it was just on the LCD, but I transferred the photos to my PC and it's there too. Does that mean the pixel is on the sensor itself?

Here's what I mean. Look at the red tack, left side.

It's a 100% crop, and I know the focus missed, oh well. I realize it's a very easy fix in Photoshop, but it's an expensive camera, and it should be in flawless condition.

I already emailed B&H about it, but they're closed due to Passover, and they told me to re-submit my request on April 6th when they reopen. I'm not sure there's any way to fix this, other than get a new body; am I right?

EXIF: 28mm, f/2.0. 1/60th of a second, ISO 800, exposure compensation +.3, no flash.

Thanks all.

There's no such thing as a dead/hot pixel-free sensor, Jason.

Some conversion software maps 'em out automatically, and there's a trick with the camera's sensor cleaning functionality which can make the camera do the same thing (Google "Canon stuck pixel fix").

A single viewable dead pixel will certainly be within manufacturer's tolerances - let's face it, one out of 18,000,000 is pretty impressive.

Or you could just stop pixel-peeping at 100% view!

;)

I'm not 100% on this but I think you have to have 5+ pixel's before most camera shop's will change it.

But you could jump up and down and make alot of noise and see what happens, good luck.

I don't think I would very happy if my camera had a stuck pixel in each photo, I would ask for a replacement.

Thanks Keith :) I looked, did the fix, and ya know, I think the stupid pixel is gone. More testing to find out :) And btw, I can't help but look at 100% ;) I'm completely anal about it. Is there a (support) forum for that? :)

I've personally never run into an actual stuck pixel on a camera. I have found that they sometimes get hot when the exposure is off.

When I tried to stack a load of night sky images together, it became very obvious that my 30D has a good half dozen. I gather its perrfectly normal, and while its frustrating on an expensive new camera, its easy to fix in post processing.

You've no right to a replacement for a single stuck pixel - it's well within manufacturing tolerances.

You should see the dust, hair, and smears on the negatives I get back from CVS.
