Caracara are mostly scavengers but they will take birds, amphibians and small mammals given the opportunity. andydajo wrote in post #9883833 Great shots. Thanks Andy Scott

It seems like they just mingle with a flock of vultures, all after the same feast I suppose. Thanks Gary...there were some vultures around, but there was a definite pecking order and the vultures stayed away until the Caracara was finished. The vultures didn't even go near the Coot while the Caracara made a couple of trips back to its nest to feed the young ones (apparently there are two). Scott

The Caracara do in fact hunt coots, ducks and other birds, but will also take full advantage of rood kill. Whats fun to watch is them hunting for eggs. They will watch a turtle dig a nest, then come back and dig up the eggs, but sometimes they will not wait that long and take the eggs as the turtle is laying them. They also steal alligator eggs.
