Headed out to Fontana today for the 2nd round of the AMA superbike and supersport series. The conditions were very challenging. Wind gusts of 45mph and shooting through the fences were just a few of the challenges. I also attempted some panning shots using a ss of around 1/160....that was really difficult! Appreciate some C&C especially from some of the more experienced motorsport shooters on the forum!! Thanks!

Hey there Mike, it's Jeff (getbent) from the race yesterday. Glad to see your work, those are some fantastic shots. The second one is magazine worthy. Just crop out the tire on the left. But the colors and the framing are just beautiful. Nice work man.

Mine didn't come out nearly as well. I'll post a few up when I have a chance.

I agree though, shooting through the fence was difficult. I don't know how you do it, but I would focus ahead of time and wait for them to get into frame and then shoot. I'm sure there's a better way, but that was my first motorsports attempt and I had no idea what I was doing. Haha.

See you around.

Hey Jeff!! It was nice meeting you there! I wish I could have gone today also but family obligations kept me at home. Shooting through the fence sucks and you have to get right up next to it for it to work decent. There were a few holes in the fence that you can get your camera through but those are usually packed with photographers. I had tons of bad photos that were crap as this was really the first time I tried panning at lower shutter speeds. It definitely takes a lot of practice. Luckily with 10fps I got lucky on a few of my shots!! It really makes you appreciate the folks that do it so easily...

All in all it was a great day of racing...these guys were cooking!!

Oh brother, look at that last pic. Outstanding!

Yeah, I ride myself, done some track days and such, and thought I was going fast, but these guys make me look like I'm on training wheels.

Thanks Stu. I was in one of the "cages" on the infield and was promptly escorted out....LOL. I didn't know it was for credential only photographers. There was only one person in them that I saw.

I used the 300 f2.8 with the 1.4x. Its a beast to use for panning!

Really nice work Michael. My favorites are the last one and #2, the give a real sense of the action.

To say that Fontana is challenging to shoot, especially from the spectator areas, is a a monumental understatement and you did quite well. Hell I don't even think much of Fontana as a road course, it is certainly no Laguna Seca.

In any event you did quite well.

Bless the recently fallen and their family and friends.
I have a Cannon with me at all times. You can't take the shot if you don't have something with which to shoot.

Very nice work here and Skip is right Fontana is definitely not like a traditional road course. The wind was very challenging on Saturday.Looking forward to seeing more of your images.

Yes very very nice images, thanks for sharing. Would be fun to see. MJ motorsports starting off the year pretty well too from what I've seen.

Did you use a monopod for the 300mm pan shots?
