Good refreshing read.

#1 I'm glad I didn't learn PP until 3-4 months into my first DSLR. It added a whole new dimension to photography. I do look back and am a bit sad that now I feel as though every-single-shot must be PP'd.

#3 Don't even know how to dodge & burn so not a problem .... yet!

#5 I made this mistake as an early LR adopter. I was adding artificial vignettes to EVERYTHING. I'm so glad I'm over that phase.

#8 Cannot agree more.

lol I was that guy who bought Photoshop but truth be told... it pretty much just sit on my HDD since then. I help fixed a couple old family photo that got teared up and faded and that was about it.

Rest of the time? DPP and I just started to fall in love with LR 3 beta 2.

Great post, I don't know that I agree with waiting so long to start using photoshop though. It is such an integral part of digital photography, I think that it is better that you learn early and make the mistakes way before you have clients. I admit that I was guilty of a few of the things listed, (selective color and excessive vignettes) but if I waited two years before I had any experience with photoshop I think I would have still made those same mistakes and that the extra time wouldn't have changed anything in my learning process, better to get started, make the mistakes and get those days out of the way before you have paying clients.

I don't think it's meant to be arrogant...did you read the disclaimer/conclusion at the end?

"These are obviously EXTREME examples.Everything has it’s place in moderation. This post is truly just a satire. Me poking fun at and industry to which I belong, and that I love."

I thought it was quite amusing.

Everything in moderation...especially moderation!
I liked the post. I think all of us have started down some of those roads...fads...call them what you like. Fortunately, from the standard of most of the work I see in these forums, it seems that our inate good taste draws us back from the worst excesses and we move on...a little cleverer and a little wiser.

I was amused by all the comments below the article.

90% of which were, "Oh, I rarely do any PP'ing work on my photos..."

(yawn)

I am here to say I am GUILTY of all the things in that article and have a blast doing it! I'm a PP'ing whore and wouldn't trade it for anything. To me, that's half the fun.

But I'm not so arrogant or full of hubris as to tell others what they should or shouldn't do. Other than: Do what ya like and have fun!

I don't PP my film pictures... :P

Honestly? You, as a photographer may think that selective colour is evil, but it's what people want. A bride will have her album and you can guarantee that the selective colour picture of her holding her bouquet will be the one her friends fawn over.

Horses for courses I think. Also, a vignette enhances most photos... if the person looking at them doesn't know it's there!

Good read, I agree with most of his points (to an extent of course). It was entertaining at least.

I agree with you there! I don't overdo it (i dont think), but i add a little vignette here and there. I'm will also kick up the saturation in photos when i think it looks good. In short, i stopped caring what other people thought my senior year in highschool. I say, do what you want and let the market decide if its right or wrong.

I'm going home and putting big *ss lens flairs on all of my pictures... :D
