Hello all. I haven't been to the forums in quite some time, but I am looking for some help. I will be going to New York City for four days in May and I want to rent a lens to take. I have a Rebel XS with a 17-55mm non-IS kit lens and a EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens. I wanted to rent something I can keep on my camera the majority of the time. So I was thinking something in the wider range, but still able to zoom in a good bit. I am renting so price isn't too much of an issue. What would you all suggest?

For me I will just rent/buy 17-55 f2.8 IS USM and bring only this lens + a flash for whole NY trip :D

Travel light will help you getting good shots.

That 17-55 f2.8 IS USM looks pretty nice. I don't have anywhere close to that kind of money to spend right now, so it would definitely be a rental :p.

I was in NYC this time last year and the only lens I ended up using was the 17-55 2.8 IS the entire time. It's such a versatile lens.

I bought a Tamron 17-50mm when I was in NY. No IS, but those skyscrapers aren't going anywhere :-)

When I went to New York City I considered where I would be going and carried only ...
EOS 40D
17-40 f/4L
6 batteries
8 CF cards

Travel light, move about more comfortable, no big gear bag to worry about someone running off with. A good fried of mine went up there loaded to the hilt with gear, he sat his gear bag down to get something from his pocket and someone ran off with it. All he was left with was the camera around his neck. He lost a DSLR body and several lenses, including two "L" lense as well as a bunch of smaller items.

For a crop body in NYC, I'd have to agree with others so far that the 17-55 2.8 IS would be an excellent rental for this trip. Check out my Flickr link below, and you may notice that my go-to choice for my recent NYC trip was the 24-70L (on FF, so a comparable FL). Some situations may call for a FL even wider than that, but your only other option is to bring along a 10-22 and switch lenses. I don't think that's entirely necessary.

I would bring a tripod for some late-night creative long-exposures in the city, but don't forget that tripods are generally unwelcome indoors in NY.

Ya forgot to mention "Tripod" you will need it for NY city night view etc..., but please bring a small light tripod (stable one) which could just hold a body with 17-55 f2.8 IS USM :)

Why this lens? Because travel light, walk around, IS, nice Zoom and f2.8~

When you walk around in the city, you don't like to change lens all the time....

For FF body 24-70 f2.8 USM will do the job, but for me 50 f1.2 USM could cover up 90%...

Don't bring anything, figure what you want and purchase it here. Your going to get the best deal at one of the well known stores and you can try them out before you decide. I find that the 24-105 works well for general working around and if you have a longer zoom you can get things across the river and perhaps the tops of buildings.

We went to NYC last summer. I already had a 17-55, but I bought a 10-22 just for the trip based on comments in these fourms. I figured if I didn't like it I could sell it for close to what I paid it.

In summary, the 10-22 was on my camera MUCH MORE than the 17-55!!! I don't use my 10-22 very often, but for that NYC trip it was clearly my go to lens and I decided to keep it. I also have 85 and 70-200 but left both of those at home (I never even missed them). I took my flash too (used it once or twice I think).

I too would rent a 10-22mm. I used it much much more than my 17-50mm. You want WIDDDDDDDE for NYC.

Here's a couple of shots from my visit in February.
