I traded for B800 and Vagabond.. So for onlocation/outside shooting (mostly B&G, Couples) what would work better for me Softbox, octobox or BD?

What are pros/cons of each? Should I go with foldable or non-foldable??

Thanks!

I say BD because it wont blow over as easy, super easy to setup, but on the downside, it does not fold up like the others.

Can someone give me time frame of how long it would take to set up B800 with foldable box vs. non foldable box?

Thanks!

I can set up my 47" Octa in about 3 minutes. I really don't think you need a foldable softbox. What is three minutes really? Most of the time I look like a goof setting it up and it makes people laugh.

You can always buy the bowen quick speed ring to use with non foldable SB or octobox. That will simplfy the setup time. Looks at Tetrode's thread.

When putting together my 5' photoflex octobox, it is pain to get the last rod in. Medium SB on other hand is no problem.

I think it just depends on your needs. A BD is nice but if you want softer light a SB or OB is the way to go. I personally am not as efficient at setting up OBs as the other poster. I think we practice I could maybe get it down to 10 minutes, but if I was traveling with my modifiers I would get foldable modifiers. There are some good ones on eBay. Just look for reviews.

WHy don't you get the bowen quickring then it doesn't matter if the softbox or octobox is foldable or not. The setup will be real fast and from my usage of AB foldable strip box a non foldable one takes less space as rods are separate from the softbox.

Look here.

It basically makes setup of softbox, octobox very easy as you don' thave to struggle to get the last rods in.

They all have different qualities of light,. It all depends on what you are shooting and what look you are trying to achieve. That will determine which one is right. If you can afford it get all three. For what I shoot I have found a large soft box for my key light is right in a lot situations but other require umbrellas. Sometime a harsher light like a large parabolic is what I need with a soft box as fill. It just depends on what quality of light I'm looking for.

The first time you set up a softbox, it tends to be very time consuming, as you struggle to get the rods into the speedring. Taking it apart is even more time consuming as you struggle to get the rods out of the speedring!

Practice, practice, practice...the times will come down!!!
