Also learn the art of feathering
It can be a very useful tool when only using a key light and a reflector for fill.

I don't understand why anyone would want to take the poles out of a softbox. The Bowens Quick Ring referenced in the other link looks like a good fix for an otherwise lousy design. Seeing as the OP had ABs to start with, buying more PCB seems like a much better and easier solution. That's my two cents...If I'm wrong, please enlighten me. Not remove poles from a softbox...remove poles from the speedring to collapse it for transport or storage! (I don't have a van to put an assembled large softbox into it to drive somewhere! Proper tool for the job. A softbox has a different quality of light than an octobox has.

A softbox has a different quality of light than an octobox has. Could you explain that please ? In my mind, the difference is just shape....what am I missing in my understanding of it ? Thanks. regards, george w

You have to admit that they are the same basic technology. I have a PCB "stripbox" and an octabox. They both open like an umbrella, work great, and when collapsed fit in a bag that is about 9" in diameter and about 24" long. That's small enough for me. I'm not sure if this answered his question..? 1D Mk III | 450D Gripped | Σ 30 f/1.4 | 85 f/1.8 | 18-55 IS

I'm currently working on some sample shots to demonstrate exactly what you're describing, using an assortment of modifiers of different shape and size and a reflector. ...waiting for that Rob, thanx! flickr
