Was this for an assignment or for pleasure? I have to wonder how many of those images were usable and how many were actually processed.

When I shoot that many it's usually for my business while I'm on a trip. I only have that one chance so I don't take any chances. Most of the shots are usable the hard part a lot of times is deciding which ones to use. Sure, these days I could get by probably with only a dozen or so shots of each subject but memory cards are cheap insurance.

I've collected these over several years. The ones near the top are the ones I use the most. The bottom ones are just in case (as they have already been well used) or have moved into other devices like GPS equipment and music processors.

CF:
2x 16GB Extreme III
6x 8GB Extreme IV
4x 8GB Extreme III
4x 4GB Extreme III
1x 2GB Ultra II
2x 1GB Ultra II
4x 512MB Ultra II
3x 256MB
6x 32MB

SD/SDHC:
4x 8GB Extreme III
2x 8GB Ultra II
2x 4GB Extreme III
4x 4GB Ultra II
2x 2GB
4x 512MB

So in total that would be about 135GB in CF cards and 78GB in SD/SDHC cards.

That 5000 images over two days works out to continuously shooting at the rate of 5 images per minute for over 8 hours each day. Certainly not a proponent of Henri Cartier-Bresson's "Decisive Moment" style of photography.

Here we go...

Do you understand the cost involved in booking a trip on short notice? When you have only one shot at something? Try more like two 16 hour days and 100-200 subjects.

I have a ziplock bag floating around here somewhere with a bunch of those 8MB starter cards. I didn't count them because they're useless for the cameras I have now. Maybe they would bring something on eBay as "collectibles". ;)

They used to be good for firmware updates. Now you need the 16MB cards as the firmware is usually over 8MB. ;)

Understandable. Do you have a link so I can see some of your work?

I don't post business on public message boards. I don't sell my work, I use it for the business that I own. I do post my personal shots, lately that has been birds. You can find them in the bird forum.

Shooting that many in such a short period of time is unusual. Typically I'm on the west coast for two to eight weeks. The same thing applies though, I have one shot at the products I need to use. I can't depend on mechanical hard drives so I'm sure to have enough cards to hold 6-8000 shots.

Why do you have a fear of hard drives?
