ok, I tried a couple of slower subjects to improve my panning of aircraft at 125th..... I'm getting there but still not as sharp as I'd have liked. He was doing touch and goes at a local airport.

Oh, and here is a " DOH, I missed it" story for you all.

I was watching this guy above doing some touch and goes and practicing my panning, when the phone rings, it's the bro in law. As I'm yakking I see one plane come in and I'm just watching it as I'm chatting. Next thing he bounces the landing, so I'm waiting for a go around.....no, he keeps on bouncing, each getting worse and worse and it got to a point where it was bouncing nose wheel first, then the mains, then airborne, and back down onto the nose wheel and repeat. On about the 6th or so bounce I heard the sound of prop striking ground! I couldn't believe it, nothing happening for about an hour, as soon as I start yakking on the phone, I missed it all completely. And what did he want? nothing, he wanted to know what I was doing!!! I told him I was missing out on shooting something exiting thanks to his perfectly timed phone call about NOTHING!

I did go around to the flight school and snap a shot of the now bent prop tip, but it would have been nice to capture it as it happened, especially as I had the damn camera next to me. A very expensive landing for someone!

Another lesson learnt, don't answer the phone when you are taking photos, stuff them, they'll call back!

These are very well done.

Sorry you missed the PIOs (Pilot Induced Oscilations...)

Shame the pilot didn't elect to go around. Prop Strike = Engine Tear Down = $$$$$

Thanks Jay, I'm certainly enjoying practicing getting the speeds down, not just for the prop blur, but the background as well. It makes the image come alive, not necessarily mine, but in general.
I did the same for my RC photos I did recently, and whilst you can get good prop blur at 500 and above sometimes depending on engine size, you miss out on the motion blurred background.....but of course you guys know all this already!

It's like a little light has just turned on in my head!

And I tell you what, it certainly makes me appreciate even more you guys who can nail shots at less than 1/100th on something hurtling through the sky

Looks like the practice is paying off :-)

Thanks counter. Annoying thing about this airport is not many good spotting points with the sun behind.

Nice shots, but too centered. For instance, crop the white off the bottom of #2 & look at that.

I was trying to work out what to do with that white runway marker originally, but do you mean keeping the rest of that shot and only cropping at the runway? I do see what you are saying, they are a bit "stuck in the middle"

Maybe I would in #1.
In #2, "At the runway" might be a tad too tight. Crop just above the white.
