Lastolite triflector nose shadow

A friend had asked me if she could wear a baseball cap for some studio portrait shots. I decided to try some experiments with my favorite mannequin model first, using a single boomed strobe/beauty dish and the triflector. I was curious if I could effectively remove shadows from under the visor of the hat by just using the 3 reflector panels of the triflector and without introducing a fill light. I couldn't seem to do it. The visor is blocking the light from above. The reflectors are bouncing light up to the eyes but also creating a shadow from the nose at the same time. I tried a number of different reflector positions, and I'm wondering if there's anything else I could have tried (other than a fill light). Thanks.

Hat and beauty lighting, I don't think it will work.

Even with regular lighting and hats you want to move the main lower and also tilt the hat/head a bit so more light can get to the eyes. I would advise to do the shots without the hat if using over head beauty dish.

Yeah, the question just sparked my curiosity and then the experiment. Your technique is probably the only reasonable way to get good results. I even thought about putting reflective material on the underside of the visor!

Interesting idea. I think I am going to try putting reflectors on the underside of the visor, to try and cancel the nose shadow created from the light below.
