Here a couple of pics from about a year ago that I just came across. The pilot lost power in the left engine and tried to set it down in the field. He was thrown from the aircraft when the right wing hit the ground and had some cuts and scrapes but was otherwise unhurt.

Poor Apache.. but how was he thrown out? All the windows look intact.

Doesn't look as if it cartwheeled either.

Excellent shots. Here's the NTSB factual report. According to the report, he had water in the fuel tanks. You can read more here: http://ntsb.gov ….asp?id=CEN09LA211&rpt=fa (external link)

Got the info here (external link). It said the right wing hit the ground and the plane spun around. I wonder if the door was thrown open and he went out through it. Seems like the seat belts should have held him in; must have been a hell of a hit.

Guys lucky to have made it. That had to be one heck of a spin to have ejected the pilot out the door. Almost comical in a weird way.

from what i remember, when making an emergency landing, you crack the door so you can get out. if you leave it shut, there is a chance that the door could get stuck shut and you'll be trapped inside. maybe he unlatched his seatbelt as well?

I've only heard that in reference to a water landing. When you are sinking the water pressure can prevent the doors from opening. Interesting thought about doing it on land.

I was taught to open the door(s) just prior to touchdown as well for a forced landing.
