prime shooters, what's your lens backup setup?

I am a fairly happy prime shooter. On crop, 30/85 is my pick. I have a 17-50/50-135 combo as an alternate, and when I needed something wide.

However, I recently picked up a 5Dc. And am planning out where I should take my lens backup. I was thinking 24 2.8/Sig 50/135L is where I'd end up. And backup would be a 24-70/70-200 combo (likely sigma). 40D would replace my 20D backup body wise, and I'd keep the 17-50 until I went full FF.

But I got to thinking, does anyone just duplicate their prime lineup? Or have you found the off chance of zoom versatility well worth it?

Though, I've also considered just renting the zoom combo when I do events too, but even at just a few events, the cost locally would suck. As of now, I only have the sig50/85 1.8 to use on FF, but getting the 24 soon.

Thoughts?

I don't really consider lens backups. I almost never bring my tamron 28-75, which would cover everything from 24 to 85mm (if I brought it). The 70-200 gets brought about 50% of the time, and in the same range I have the 135L. I don't have or use lens backups just to have the backups - I bring lenses I think I am going to use on that day.

you're thinking about collecting a ton of OK-to-decent primes, why not use those funds to build the HoLy Trinity, and backup with zooms?

I agree with the above.

Get the primes in the focal length you really like. and back up with zooms that cover the same range.

24 2.8/Sig 50/135L as your primes with the 24-70/70-200 combo as back up sounds like a great idea

Camera body selection can help with this. Look at the obvious assortment: 24, 35, 50, 85, 135, 200. If you were to have all of these lenses and a FF body with a 1.6 crop as your back-up body, you have built in redundancy. If something happens to your 35, put the 24 on the crop and it turns into a 35. And the 35 turns into a second 50, the 50 into an 85, and so on. Only your 24 would be exposed.

I'd probably keep my 17-50 until I sold my 40D down the line. But after I posted, I started thinking the same as I have an 85 already. But the cost of the 35L.... I almost might as well buy another 5Dc as my backup and solve the dual format issue =)

I'm more of the holy duality, heh. I'd just need the 135L. and the 24 is the only "ok" lens, I'd consider the Sig 50 (at least my copy) pretty damn good. I'd gather the 135L is pretty good too ;) The big reason for the 24/2.8 is I just don't find myself at 24 much. If I am, it's a group shot. And the lens budget is currently occupied by the 135L i need to get.

heh, I guess I'm just paranoid. I don't want to accidentally have my 50 drop and nothing to cover it. It's the network admin side of me and data loss paranoia.

There's a really easy solution: Don't drop your equipment.

Well, we all have the best of intentions, but one swarm of kids, one batch of guys taking open bar a little too far...

yes, I know it's very unlikely to happen. but figured I'd get some input from folks who've been at it longer.
