I think it was about 2 hours before sunset when I took this. I used my 100-400mm with a Tamron 1.4x and Promaster 2.0x TC.

It looks to me as though the contrast has been pushed too much and you've way over-sharpened.

Thanks for the tip. I'd say that I'm new to astrophotography, but this is pretty much the extent of my taking pictures of celestial bodies and probably as far as I'll get! I'll experiment and see if i can dial down the contrast and the sharpening. I tend to have a habit of 'over doing' my post processing. Gotta break that one! I was trying to emphasize the craters in the moon and got carried away.

Looks like you have more detail than my 100-400.

I got lucky - I bought it on Fredmiranda from an excellent seller and got a real sharp copy. I was impressed with the detail - even going through two non-Canon TCs. I tried a similar shot with my old Soligor 400mm 6.3 and there was no comparison.

I suggest a couple of things:
- Ensure a steady tripod w/ remote release etc
- Drop one of the TCs
- Use a shorter exposure time, especially at such focal lengths (use a higher ISO if needed)

Here is one of my moon shots with the 400mm F/5.6 and a 2xTC from a 20D: http://www.clubpoint.net …rd/.misc/Moon_800x800.JPG (external link)

So I think you've got a good chance of more detail with a slightly shorter focal length.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have a decent tripod (Induro - although I'm definitely planning on getting some sturdier legs) and I was using the remote release. I actually took a few shots with the 1.4x and a few with the 2.0x, but didn't feel like I was getting enough detail. I'll try that again at a higher shutter speed. I believe I was at 1/400 on this one. If you don't mind my asking, what were your settings/configuration on your shot? It's fantastic!
