Hey,

I've recently bought a used Canon 30D that came with a 50mm 1.8 prime, I also just bought a second hand Sigma 17-70 DC f/2.8-4.5 to go with it. I m planning on using the 50mm for indoor low light shots and the Sigma as my main walk-around lens.

I just want to see if anyone has some good pointers for different uses/situations where each lens has its strengths and weaknesses? Pro and cons of each lens from a user perspective?

I've got hoods for both of them and a UV filter for the 50mm, should I bother with one for the Sigma? I've read different views but just don't want spend money on things like that when I should be saving for better glass.

Last thing, I don't know if I should get a flash, I never really thought I'd need one but since I've been doing so much research on lens/camera's and everything photographic it seems they have so many benefits in both dark/night (obviously) and bright/day situations with shadows.

lots of questions but appreciate any feedback.
cheers.

Congrats on your new setup. I use my 17-70 as my main walkaround zoom. The macro capability can be a lot of fun, it's quite versatile, and the bokeh is good...at least to me it is anyway :). Just be careful that you don't hold the lens by the focus ring as it turns during auto focus and holding it while it tries to turn could damage it.

Not sure what you shoot, but if you are shooting a lot outdoors, you may want to consider a good circular polarizer. I have a Hoya Pro-1 for mine. UV filters for protection is a personal choice. For me, I don't presently use one. The lens does have a tendency to hunt in low light, so if you are using it in these situations, a flash could be useful.

For your 50, is it the 1.8 or 1.4? If it's the 1.8, it will definitely hunt in low light, but is a great bang for the buck and can produce some really sharp images. I did notice on mine that with the UV filter, there can be reflections/ghosting of lights at night. Only reason I recently sold mine was because after I acquired a Sigma 30, the 50 was relegated to my bag.
