Outdoors though in bright sun I have had misfires. The trick is to try and swivel the remote IR sensor of the remote heads towards your camera. I don't use umbrellas outdoors.
This is my issue. I'm more than happy with infared's performance indoors. Line of sight is an issue here and there, like for back lighting. But for that, since I don't need to be too precise about exposure, it's just a regular trigger and a guess at the setting.
Outdoors is really where I want that better performance. Yes, turning the receiving flash towards the master helps, but it's spotty which eats up at our time and my credibility. But do I drop $500+ just for that when I can work with a long ETTL (as obnoxious as that can be)?
I have to believe the next version of flashes that Canon comes out with introduces radio communication. I'd hate to drop the money on ETTL triggers only to find it embedded in a flash for about the same price.
