I'm heading to Sea World for a couple of days but I've never actually taken anything other than a P&S there. I'm taking my S90 and my 5D MKII. I'm trying to chooose between one of the following:

24-105
70-200 & 1.4x
100-400
135L & 1.4x

I'm a bit hesitant because of the water at the killer whale show but I can stand back. Would I be better off just taking my S90?

i say 24-105 would be versatile for sea world since you might want to take some wider end.

70-200 (some versions) is weather sealed....

You shouldnt need to worry about lens speed since it outdoors and likely sunny. You also will prob want to be further back than the "splash" seats, so you may not be super close. For that reason I would say go with the 70-200 and extender to be able to zoom in close (from your seats, 70 may still be wide enough for "wide" angles of the stage/tank). The only downside is if you want to take pictures with your group that will be harder - esp since to back up enough you will need space - getting people to stop walking between you and your subject in a busy park would be tough. If you didn't mind, you could do those people shots with the P&S and the DSLR of the whale show with the 70-200.

If it were me with your bag though, I would bring both the 24-105 and 70-200. YMMV

The 24-105 is perfect for everything at Sea World, except for the shows where the 70-200 will be the lens of choice. I don't like carrying lots of gear around with me so I would leave the 70-200 in the car and go get it just for the shows. Ive done this at Sea World & Disney and it works well, especially at Sea World because the parking lot is closer than most Disney parks :) Have a great time!

The 100-400 is going to be too long for the shows. The 70-200 without the extender is probably your best choice. The last time I went to SeaWorld it was with the 70-200 and Tamron 28-75.

most likely. ever been there? going with family/kids? if yes to both.. just tote the p/s and enjoy yourself.

edit: ok i re-read and yeah, you've been there. still, measure how much you'll enjoy yourself.

also, long lenses for big distant action are good.

i have a camera. it takes nice pictures.

Thanks for all the replys. I'm a bit afraid of taking in my gear as I baby my stuff a bit too much. I'm questioning walking into the park with a $5k body/lens combo instead of just pocketing my S90. My wife will have the HV20 for video so thats covered.

well your gear is with you at all times so what's the big deal the only thing i can think of is that it's a bit heavy. I would just consider the S90 if it's a trip for everyone to enjoy. I would bring the SLR if i am letting my kid have the fun and trying to capture all the good parts for memories.

I've brought my gear with me to the SD Zoo, Wild Animal Park and Disneyland and never had problems, other than the fact that it can get heavy bringing along the 70-200 walking around all day. Just stay away from the front/splash sections. I don't have kids yet so I don't have lil ones running around to watch for though.

I am sure that it was meant as humor but many are still dealing with a dear friends death.

You will have pleanty of light in most settings but the Believe show is under cover with a roof so lighting may be a challenge. There are places you can sit whee getting wet isn't near as likely. Ask around when you get in the stadium.

Have a great day!

DO NOT SIT IN THE FRONT ROWS! Sea world killed our (p&s) camera. Splash zone is an incorrect term, its more like tsunamiwave zone ^^

I dont think you'll need the 24-105, Id say just take the 70-200. I would just take one lens, cause its a full day of walking and taking two lenses is very heavy and tiring.
Also if youre carrying it around your neck you shouldnt have to be worried about losing it or it disappearing.
