While purchasing my new 50D, the salesman, who had already been informed that this wasn't my first Canon, starting dissing Canons in general. He went on and on about how Nikon's flash and auto focus are superior to Canon. I had it in mind to rip him a new one, but I was so happy with my new toy, I wasn't about to let him rain on my parade. I was wondering how the rest of you would have handled this clown?

He's probably right about the flash system (don't know about AF), but for me it would depend on his tone. If we were sprinkling in conversation about what we liked, I'd have just considered it part of the conversation. There are a couple sales people at the local store that I prefer, and we do this all the time. If he were arrogant or smug about it, I'd have left, though I do like this idea, also...

Mike buy at guitar center I think the place is a zoo. I don't buy guitars from stores I have them made custom order. How's that for feeding the snobbery motif? People who are serious about performance won't go to Walmart looking for a race bike. The snob bike store store may be virtually empty but it doesn't take many high end bike sales to keep the doors open for those who are attracted to that.

I understand the custom guitar thing. Nobody can beat Carvin for outstanding quality. They're the best.

But Guitar Center isn't the same as Walmart. Wal Mart only sells lowend stuff. Guitar Center sells 15 thousand dollar Les Pauls (and yes you can order custom) and 4500 dollar vintage strats and such.

The bike shop with the bike snobs sells cheap bikes too, it's just that their inventory is low because few people shop there anymore. The other bike store sells products for all levels, and treats all customers like high-end customers.

Snobs lose business. It's as simple as that.

BTW: there are three music stores near my house: Guitar Center, a small one close by, and a mom and pop down the road. The small one close by has low inventory, a staff that knows nothing about guitars (none are set up and tuned), and the mom and pop has signs everywhere saying "don't touch".

I always go where people are friendly and appreciate my business.

Thank you. bw!

Realistically, building custom cameras is less practical from a manufacturing aspect as well.

There are two non chain camera stores that stock a reasonable amount of gear and a wide enough variety to call themselves a camera retailer within a 50 mile radius of my home. One is in a large city, the other is in a small town, probably about one hundred times smaller than the big city. Both are busy all the time, I have never and probably will never be the only customer in either shop.
The big city store is populated by self important camera snobs of all types. You want a film snob? they got one. hasselblad snob? no problem. If they are running a sale on canon, thats the pushed brand this week, next week it's Nikon. They wouldn't know my name if I worked there, and if I wanted to consign, it would be for a high percentage of a low enough price that they wouldn't have to work too hard to sell it.
The small shop has every bit as much stock as the big store, maybe even more different items cause they know what their customers use and have a steady customer base. They know what I own, what I want to own, and never push me in any direction hard enough to make it difficult to get what I want without seeming like I am bucking their advice to get it. I have never heard a story about bad service there, I hear good reviews all the time. Guess where I shop?

I would have asked him how he would use the EF lenses on a Nikon then walked out and bought the camera elsewhere. It isn't worth having someone ruin the whole experience of getting a new camera.

this is one of my guitars (main guitar and back shot) ... sounds amazing ... my other main guitar is a custom cutaway classical by the same family.

I've been through at least 50 electric guitars (been playing since '72), 3 Les Pauls, and on and on. The electric I have now is a Warmoth strat I put together with Lawrence pickups. A beautiful canary top on a alder body with a big fat -3/4" neck. Make a great blues guitar. I never play it though because of my acoustics and fascination for solo guitar. I've been through maybe 10 hand made high end acoustics but at last have reached the end of that road. Same for photography equipment.

Getting back to the original title of the thread, I think the ones that gall me the most are the people that think their 12 Mp Sony pocket point and shoot is better than my 10Mp 40D with the 70-200 f2.8 IS lens on it...

I'm a little surprised at everyone's "knickers in a knot" over this. What happened to not letting your environment control you? It's like this place is filled with hormone ridden teenagers who cannot function in this world without drama.

You are a consumer. He is a retailer. It's his job (whichever company pays the perks to sell more) to upsell, refocus etc...but it's completely within your power to simply say "no thank you, I'm not interested". Done deal.

Your desire for a canon is not "lessened" by his opinion that a nikon is better.

But being a free country...everyone is allowed opinions. So ignore them, shop elsewhere, move on...but dudes...get over it. Life it way too short to care a fig what anyone else thinks of what you buy (good or bad).

A very sensible comment. I am a sales person guys, and yes when u get paid for what u sell it is how it works. I have converted a lot of people to nikon/canon/olympus/pentax just by telling my personal opinion/helping to decide what's best for them.
What u are saying is just being extremely rude and short minded.
