I'm very very frightened. What's going on here?

I hope this is the case as well...but from an artistic point of view (and I am, by no means, an "Artist" ) this is eerily bad. It's a good quality picture, but the subject matter is sad .... especially if it's real. If it was just a point of view thing, *I* personally think it's poor taste

Very evocative photo.

Reminds me of the work of Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep (external link)

Not working for me. And definitely does not remind me of the wonderful organization and photos on Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep. Regardless of this child either being dead or alive, it's just disturbing and doesn't make me think of angels departing at all.

I'll admit that at first it didn't bother me. After I read a few comments, it began to concern me, mainly for the members of PotN. I'm not very good with human interaction. Suffice it to say I sought appropriate judgment. Thank you Skip.

Our daughter was born a preemie in 1998. We almost lost her many times, more than once while I held her in my arms. I also almost lost my wife due to complications from delivery. I'll never forget those days. Both are alive and generally well today. Most recently I considered involving myself in Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep, in part because I know something about what these parents experience. Unfortunately for me and to their credit, NILMDTS wants professionals. I'm clearly an amateur.

If this is a child that passed away, he's still very important to his parents. Unless you've been close to a situation like this, it's difficult to imagine what his parents experienced. He was an important part of their lives, and will be an important part of their lives for as long as they live. While it will never be easy for them to discuss him, I'm sure they don't want to see the memory of him rejected or ignored. He lived and he died, and he was an important part of their lives.

There's a reason first birthdays are celebrated. They don't all see it, even today. These children that pass away are still important to their parents, even if they aren't here for very long. A photo helps to keep these little ones in their parents' memories.

I assume this photo is real. I see the roses and the rose petals. I see the little guy, the tragedy of his short life and the pain his Mom and Dad experience. This photo may give his parents the hope and strength to move forward when they'd rather not.

In closing, I think mahmood abu hamda posted this in celebration of this little guy's life. This is an international forum, and we don't all share the same experiences.

I'm not reacting to photos of a dead child. I've seen many photos of dead children and depending on the CONTEXT, react differently to each one. When I see a photo of a dead child in the newspaper, as the result of an earthquake etc., it evokes one type of emotion. A child that is the victim of a war, again, a different type of reaction. "Now I lay me down to sleep" type photos, are viewed by me as beautiful, albeit very sad, but tasteful and beautiful and I silently thank the compassionate photographer who put his/her own feelings aside to do this for the grieving parents. But seeing this particular photo, with the child fully clothed like that --- I don't quite know how to explain my reaction, but it was not positive by any stretch. While I would not want to limit anybody's right to post something like that in a photography forum, I sure as hell didn't like it. Call it a cultural divide perhaps, as we don't tend to see those sorts of photos typically. but whatever it is, I think that a warning in the subject line might have been more appropriate, as many folks on this forum aren't used to THAT sort of photo and were probably as unpleasantly surprised as I was to see it. Again, don't miss my point: it wasn't that it was a photo of a dead child, I've seen those before and they can be quite beautiful. It was something about THAT particular photo that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Sorry, but just as the photographer has the right to post it, and I support that right, I have the right to express my feelings about it.

Embalming requires the mouth to be glued shut. It's not real.
