Has nikon final caught up with canon, im starting to see a lot more people switching to nikon. I know canon and nikon are the top 2 and are ahead of the pack, but i also thought that canon was a few levels above nikon.

tough to answer, as there are few easily comparable cameras.
7D is better than d300s, with better images, slightly higher resolution, better movies, same price.
D3X is better than any full frame that canon makes.
7D is better than 5d2 at built, focusing, High ISO performace, Frame per second, and dynamic range. 5D2 has almost double the resolution, printing larger, and a great movie mode.
550D is the best entry level camera, but also one of the more expensive ones.
Nikon sensor technology in terms of high iso and dynamic range seems to be a bit ahead of canon now. They also tend not to cripple the autofocusing of their lower end bodies the way canon does.
Is one brand better than the other? depends on your needs and budget.

Personally I'm waiting for a limo to deliver a Leica S2 to my door step game over.

Lets assume that Nikon were indeed vastly inferior to Canon at some point and they managed to recently reach parity with Canon. Why would that compel you to sell thousands of dollars worth of Canon gear, losing money, to switch to another system that's just as good? Just pick a system and stick with it. Take whatever money you'd lose in a switch and devote it toward actually making yourself a better photographer.

All cameras are equal. A good photographer can take a stunning image with any functional equipment. A bad photographer will never take a stunning image regardless of the equipment.

Some people like to find pointless little technical differences in order to 'prove' that their brand of choice is better but in the real world, these so called differences make no difference at all.

Buy what you want or use what you have. At the end of the day, photography is an art and nobody cares what type of brush Michelangelo used.
