Any idea how much repair costs would be to repair a 40D (that I'm trying to sell) that has a stuck "on" switch". Trying to decide if the repair would be worth it.

Thanks, Joel

I never turn off my camera. Why bother getting it fixed at all?

I'm trying to sell it. Some people really want to turn their cameras off, probably most of the people who would want to buy it.

I guess you could always price it lower. I am sure there would be some one who would be willing to get a deal on a 40D that you can't turn off. Let the new buyer decide if they really want to repair it.

As far a sensor cleaning, you can use the menu to perform a sensor clean anytime you want.

Sensor cleaning is nice, but it won't take off the bigger dust particles. So if dust is beyond a certain 'size', the shaking won't help anymore either.

I rather have my sensor cleaned a bit more often and have a pretty much instant start-up time, so I turned it off in my camera.

yeah honestly i notice my camera is on a good amount of times. Today I took my camera out (last used it a week or two ago) of my bag and it was in the on position still. I wonder how much power is lost in standby mode. I think I took a solid 200-250 shots today before the battery started dying on me. But I know shot a few pics a few weeks back and not only that this is an aftermarket battery known to get fewer shots than my OEM Canon.

What about the manual clean? It says to turn the camera off when done. Could you get out of the sensor cleaning mode if you turned it on?

If I am not mistaken...sensor cleaning will also take place when changing batteries....

That is a good point. I tried the manual clean and removed the battery... The shutter and mirror stayed in the "clean" position!

Re-installing the battery ended the clean manual mode and everything was back to normal without touching the on/off switch.

Yeah, I'd probably not pay to have it fixed if it was mine, but if I was buying a 40D I would want a HUGE discount for one with that kind of quirk. Like half market value or maybe less.

Mine is currently at Canon for error 99. Repair cost is $212.00. BUT if I was going to purchase a used 40D, I would perfer one that has been repaired (reconditioned) by Canon.

fixing one issue doesn't necessarily mean the camera is "reconditioned", but buying used/refurbished from a place like adorama does include a warranty

the rest of the story. . .I had sold this and shipped it off where the buyer sent me note telling me that the on-off switch didn't work. (that's when I created the post). I told him to ship it back and refunded his money. I got the camera back today, everything works totally normally. I guess I'm a victim of buyer's remorse.

Maybe he was confused by the two on positions?

I guess it is good news as you can likely still sell it for a decent price.
