that's a good shot. The 'very soft' comment is silly. His eye lashes are distinguishable from each other.

Thanks Plasticmotif, it's one of my favorite shots that I've taken with the 85LII.

Looks very soft to me.

1.2 is paper thin DOF to work with. This shot if anything has a "look" to it that razor sharpness wouldn't necessarily improve. If I was that couple I would love having that shot. You can't forget that most customers aren't going to debate the focus point. They just like the picture. Nice work. I have never done a wedding but am "studying up" here and there is a ton of great info and work to look at.

Thanks Bradfordguy, the couple that hired us totally love the shot.

malla1962, I appreciate your comments, and enjoy reading your view point as well. Because I deal with clients that vary much could be someone like yourself. The good thing is my wife takes photographs with me as well; so she likes to use f/2.8 and f/4.0. So we give our clients variety of photography techniques.

Dumping my photos taken at 1.2 with the 85L.

One of the first test shots I did after acquiring the 85L

This one I missed the focus, I was focusing at her right eye but focus was at the left eye.

And another random 1.2

QUOTED IMAGE

Wow, I am amazed at how well f/1.2 shots can look when properly controlled! I think the missed focus isn't even noticeable, if you hadn't mentioned it.

I'm in the same boat. That's why I created this thread; so I could get motivation to use it at f/1.2. So far the shots posted here are really awesome!

When I look at these pictures, and I include my own pictures that I've taken with an f/1.4 lens, I can't help but feel that the background looks like a fake, flat painted backdrop. I actually feel like photos really lose something when the background is so smooth and "creamy" that all sense of depth is lost.

Because of this, I've begun to reserve this kind of wide open super shallow DOF shooting to situations where all the background structures are very close and crowded, so that you'll still see a transition of focus. Otherwise, the subject is just so isolated from the background that you may as well have photoshopped them into the picture.

Outside, when the background is more distant (or has a range of distances), I tend to stop down more (to f/2.2 or so). While lenses with more "graphic" bokeh are generally less well-regarded here, they actually solve this problem.

Canon 5D Mark IV, 24-105L II, 17 TS-E f/4L, MPE 65, Sigma 50 f/1.4, Sigma 85 f/1.4, 100 f/2.8L, 135 f/2L, 70-200 f/4L, 400 L

Doc,
I definitely think it a personal preference thing. For me it depends on the subject and what I'm trying to achieve.

Heres wide open with a bit of CA.

it also depends on how far your subject is from the background.
Here it is at 2.2 but the subject it a pretty far from anything which worked out great for the ad.
