I finally got a chance to test out my new 24-70, but wasn't too impressed with the sharpness and CA in one of the photos. Does this look like a soft copy or user error? Here are some smaller size photos and links to the larger Jpgs. I was looking at the RAW's in DPP, does DPP show the full sharpness of the photos or is a little fuzzy? thanks

Difficult to tell by looking at web-sized shots.
Post a few 100% crops centered on the focus-point.

About the CA, the 24-70L is known to have a noticeable amount of lateral CA which can be easily corrected in post-processing.

+1 on that idea. This will give us a better view of the photo and tell us if its soft or normal for this lens.

From the shots youve posted they look fine to me. I have the same lens.

Post up some 100% crops of the focus area.

Ok stupid question, but this was the first time I have used DPP, I am able to see the 100% crop with the AF points. How do you save it so I can post it that way? Thanks

Looks alright to me as well. I would do some micro adjust on that lens. Looks in focus, just not where you want it to be.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

Do you shoot with ONE shot or AI servo?

2.8 is a fairly thin DOF on this lenses focal lengths.

I shot these in one shot and from memory, I think there was only one picture that was taken at 2.8 and the others were stopped down to about f4 or 5.

Well the first thing I would do it take an image with a tripod with a static subject. Use a high shutter speed and manual focus on something close at 70mm (newsprint on a table works fine). If the image has no apparent sharpness anywhere you know you may have a "soft copy" which mind you is rare in my opinion.

Sorry, we are not there yet.
Those are screenshots of 100% crops downsized to 1024x592 (that is not your fault: free Flickr accounts limit the downloadable image size to 1024 pixels on the longest side).

Even so, it seems that the lens is backfocusing. That may or may not be user error. I recommend testing on static subjects.

You may follow this procedure to show us 100% crops:

- Open your original image (the one straight out of the camera, at 100% sensor resolution) with your favorite image editor.

- Do NOT rescale (otherwise it will not be a 100% crop !).

- Select a small area (say 500x500 pixels) centered on the focus point.

- Use the CROP command on your image editor (in Photoshop, select the "Image" menu and then the "Crop" command).

- Save the resulting 500x500 image as JPEG.

And that is your 100% crop
