Just returned from Rowe Sanctuary (external link) in Nebraska where I spent a night in a photo blind. For anyone who has never been there, I highly recommend it. The spectacle of many thousands of migrating sandhill cranes is not something to be missed, and I'm not aware of anywhere else you'd have the opportunity to actually spend the night in the midst of them. I can't think of a better way to have spent my Easter eve/morning. I took along my 1D Mk III and 500 with 1.4x, 40D and 100-400, and my G10.

We had a nice sunset on Saturday:

Group flying into the sun:

Suddenly there was a huge takeoff of thousands of cranes. Since it was getting dark, I had my camera already set for longer exposures and I think it worked well for this scene:

Early the next morning, this is before 6:00:

We didn't have good light in the morning, as it was completely overcast. I tried to get creative with some early flight shots:

Multiply this by 10,000 times and you'll have an idea of what the place sounds like (check out this short YouTube video (external link) I took if you really want to hear it):

Here's the blind, right on the river bank:

And my good luck mascot who made it all possible:

Thanks, it's definitely worth a visit. I don't think it's really possible to capture the magnitude of the whole thing in photos or video. People come from all over the world to witness it. The sanctuary facility itself is very nice, everything is really well organized. When you make your reservation, call first thing in the year as soon as they open up, because there are only 3 or 4 photo blinds and they are only available for a few weeks. They sell out quick.

Thanks for looking all! I'm sure I'll make some prints of these. I went last year also and spent 2 nights in a blind. The experience never ceases to amaze - I guess it's going to become an annual tradition. Oh, and I learned a new word today: "pulchritudinous" –adjective, physically beautiful; comely.

I really enjoyed this set Liz. It's as if you took me with you to witness this. Great job.
