Does anyone have a preference between the Flashpoint Gimbal Head and the Manfrotto 393 tripod heads? Both seem to offer good value for the price.

I moved from that to the Jobu Black Widow, which is quite similar to the Flashpoint I believe, when I shifted over to Arca-Swiss style QR plates and haven't looked back. If I get the time I may try to rework the 393 to accept Arca-Swiss plates. It won't be straightforward though. Jon

The reason I ask is because if you're not planning on mounting something humongous on it, a good alternative might be the Wimberley Sidekick. LINK The Sidekick is a good alternative because it allows you to keep your ball head for when you don't need a gimbal. The only thing about it is that you have to be using the Arca-Swiss style plates and have an A-S clamp on your ball head. For now my 300 f2.8 IS with my 1.4x and 2x but I am saving for a 500 f4. The side kick only works with a ball head with a Arca-Swiss style quick-release clamp. The ball head I have has a different plate so I would have to buy another ball head so for me it just seems like some kind of gimbal would be better.
