Hi all,

I'm looking into tethered shooting and would like to know if someone can recommend a good, long, USB cord. I can't afford to purchase the wireless gadget that's out there, so I'm just looking for a longer USB cord that I can work with. Possibly between 10 and 20'....?

Thanks!

I use two, six foot extensions plus the camera USB chord for a total of about 16 feet. Works just fine. Anything longer than that may require powered USB extenders.

Check out the various Hong Kong sellers on eBay. The quality from the larger sellers is acceptable. I have had good results with the seller "luxurycharm". Keep in mind that the USB spec for high speed devices is a maximum cable length of 4 - 5 meters.

Future Shop
I just looked it up on their site and they sell for $30 each. I didn't think I paid that much but maybe I did. You should be able to get them from an online retailer for much cheaper. They are common. Look for an extension that has male and female USB "A" style connectors.
& Thanks

I buy all my cables on monoprice.com, they have 15 foot ones that should work with an adapter.

According to a Maplins electronics catalogue I'm reading, the maximum length of a normal USB cable before a USB repeater is required is 5 metres. They call the cables that contain the repeaters "USB 2 Active extension leads"

They also claim that 3 of these can be daisy chained, allowing a maximum of 15 metres, or 20mts if you add that to the original (normal) cable 5 mt maximum length.

These USB 2 Active extensions are shown at £19.99 for each 5mt item. Not cheap!

I have used three of these together with a normal 1m cable and they did work.

However, I've replaced that with a different remote setup. I have my Netbook connected to the camera with a normal USB cable, then use dSLR Remote on my iPhone - connected to the netbook via WiFi - to take the images.

Get it from monoprice. I bought one from them a few months ago exactly for this purpose (tethering):

Just about any USB cord will work. Obviously it has to have the right connectors. I got my long cord on clearance at a Staples that was closing. Works fine.
