Consumer advocates routinely advise against these warranties. Consumer Reports comes just short of calling them fraud. These warranties are most often sold in bundles to third party companies who may well be out of business by the time you try to make a claim or at best difficult to work with. A few people may well say they have had a good experience but they are by far in the minority. Save your money.

As for Best Buy, I have personal experience with them not honoring a 'normal' warranty for a mini fridge. I'll never set foot in their stores again. Should have known better the first time.

My friend bought an extended warranty at Best Buy for a 26" LCD back when those TVs cost $1200. Less than 2 years and the TV broke down. Worst Buy took the TV and "fixed" it by not doing anything to it. She brought it back again. They did the same thing. She was sick of lugging around this TV from store to home and finally gave up. Guess who won?

It is a generally accepted fact that retailers and staff make little on the sales of their main products (whether that is cameras or washing machines). What they make good money (and commision) on is the "extras" ie the extended warranty, the CF card, the bag etc.

Hence the reason I would not take out the warranty at additional cost. I have however managed to get warranties thrown in after trying to negotiate a discount or extras.

Next time- try haggling with the store and see if they will either reduce the price or throw in a warranty.

An extended warranty is essentially an insurance policy. It’s all relative, risk vs. reward.

several years ago before my first DSLR I owned a Sony P&S. I had such terrible experience with that camera, I had it exchanged the first week of ownership and then 6mths later it was acting up so I had it sent for repair under warranty. Before the 1yr warranty was up I decided to trade it in at Henry's and get a Rebel XTi DSLR. This time I decided I should buy an extended warranty. They gave me a good deal on the warranty because I bought some other stuff (it was maybe $50, I can't remember), but now 2 years later I sold the camera for $300 and it never had any issues. I sold the Xti to buy a 20D, and I bought a used 30D and then 40D. After reading on the forum how high mileage you can get out of DSLR before the shutter dies I'm really not too worried about them breaking. I will most certainly not buy an extended warranty anymore on new stuff, and will take my chances buying used. The value of camera bodies goes down so fast it is not worth spending an extra penny.

No extended warranty but I do recommend the undercarriage coating and the fabric protection package.

I am getting insurance for my camera, just hope it covers repairs that maybe needed, I don't want to pay huge sums of dosh that could be used elsewhere.

As do I, but don't get suckered into one of those rust modules! A blinking box hooked up to the battery that does nothing...
