What's the point of the little "nipple" on tripod mounting plates?

Took mine off last night :) No more worrying about scratching/chipping the cameras' paint :)

You'll also find that every half decent spotting scope has a hole for the anti-twist pin to go into - allows you to run after some rare bird or other with your scope on the tripod, bins swinging around your neck, camera backpack on your back without your 'scope unscrewing and falling onto the floor ;)

For DSLR shooting, Photorgaphy or video I don't have a use for the nipple - I wish I could say otherwise as it is useful, but alas there is no insertion point on my DLSR's for a nipple.
