Anyone know anything about this new lens that's supposed to be coming out soon?? My EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is making some focus ring noise, but if the new one is coming out, I'd rather not spend the $120 or so to get it repaired...

No idea... But...
I would guess they'd upgrade the 50mm 1.2 L lens first. There's nothing wrong with the 50mm 1.4 in my opinion.

yah except there is a problem with it .... its only about a 100 year old lens and technology

okay 100 years is obviously exaggerating but i cant remember but i was reading that lens optics is about 40+ year old technology.... maybe im wrong but it might be time to update a lens with tech from the 60's.;)

Well... this lens was introduced in 1993... not sure exactly what changes they made from th previous version. I hope they just put ring USM in it. Thats all they really need to do. If they want to compete with the Sigma 50 1.4, try to make the bokeh a bit smoother, but I honestly rather have them just fix whats broken =)

The 50 f/1.2L was introduced in 2006 and the f/1.4 in 1993 (with optical design from 1971). I really doubt the f/1.2 will be the first of the two to be updated. While the f/1.4 isn't a bad lens it really needs an IQ improvement wide open and the latest USM.

If the new version will have ring USM then I'll definitely wait for it. That's the only thing holding me back from getting the 50 1.4 =/

I don't know when but the rumours seems to suggest sometime later on in the year. That's in canonrumours (CR2). An upgrade to the USM would be wonderful and I would definitely be one of the first to get it. I hope.

If your's is still working then I see no reason to repair it unless you can find a cheap 50mm 1.8 II in the interim.

How long do we have to wait? Ummmm it's impossible to tell. I heard that the 35L is also due an upgrade but I can't see that happening yet. How do you fix something that is not broken. Sure we all need better weather sealing, better coating whatnot but at a price much higher?

me too. i want the 1.2, but i like the 1.4 size.

afraid of the 1.4 motor issue. kinda iffy on 3rd party lenses.

II for the win!

I had the 50mm 1.4 and sold it for my Sigma 30mm f1.4. I couldn't be happier.

I know I was chancing the possibility of having focus issues, etc etc etc, but I'm glad my copy didn't and it is very sharp.

I have no trust issues in buying 3rd party anymore, even if I had to send them in for recalibration. The Tokina 11-16 is next on my list.

I loved the 50mm FL on my 50D. I guess it is a personal thing and only you can decide if that focal length is right for yourself.

My previously owned Sigma 50mm 1.4 has a significant CA even stopped down to f2.2 which is annoying. It also has some front focusing issues. Maybe it's just me with my luck but I'm hesitant about any other 50mm at present.

If the mark II does make it's appearence, with improved USM and optics I think it will make a lot of people very happy.

 Are you sure you didn't mean the other way around?

I wish they would make a 50 f1.4 "L" series version, perhaps the focus shift could be mitigated some. Longer than 50mm sure a 1.2 stop might come in handle but as the distances 50mm provides that is a shallow DOF range as it is!
