Why is the xxD remote so much more than the Rebel remote?

I have a nice Canon brand wired remote I bought for my Rebel. Of course the 30D I just bought has a different plug, so I can't use it on that camera. Browsing the camera shops, it looks like the cost is more than double for the 30D remote. What is so special about it? From what I can tell it is still just a simple button with a slider lock, right? $25 for the Rebel one seemed like robbery, but now they want $50 for this one!

So basically, am I missing something of value in the extra cost, and if not, are the $8 chinese ebay ones OK?

I bought both an IR and wired remote from EBay seller jiakgong. The IR works perfectly but the first wired one I got didn't so I contacted the seller and they sent me another free of charge and it works just fine.

Couldn't tell you why the price is so high. Probably because they can charge that and know people will still buy it.

I have a chinese knock off I got from eBay about a year ago. Seems to work fine, though as of late some times I will have to unplug it and reconnect for the slider switch to work properly. Probably has to do with the build quality, and the fact that it hangs from my tripod head and smashes into it every time I take it somewhere.

I think Johnsoir nailed it...they figure you can afford a more expensive camera, therefore you can afford to be gouged for a more expensive remote!

I bought mine from HVstar (aka maxsaver.net) for pennies and love it :)

The genuine Canon remote does have a nicer connector than the knockoffs, but they both generally work fine.

Also, the genuine Canon remote is made in Japan, where they have higher labor costs. However, I can't imagine the costs to be that much higher...

Take a look at the TR-90 C8, which includes various timer features, for around $25. I just bought one from etefore on eBay for £17 (I'm in the UK) and it works a treat....

If you would like a wireless remote, check my signature. I have 5 left of the C8 remotes, and a few rebel ones. If you just want a wired remote, I have one of these Phottix sets without the receiver part that would act as a wired remote with timer, bulb, etc for $15 shipped.

Out of curiosity...how is the connector nicer?

My cheapo connector seems to be just fine...it fits nice and snug, the shape/design/etc seems to be exactly the same as the Canons...just curious.

The knockoff connectors are less consistent. Yours may just work plugged in; lots of people have to wrestle theirs into position. I do on my wireless remotes, but not on my PW trigger cables or my Canon TC80N3 (or my RC60T3 with Canon T3-N3 adapter).

Then I guess I lucked out :) I've had mine on a 10D, a 20D and two 30Ds and has always worked flawlessly :)

The genuine Canon connectors slide into the port very easily and lock into place. The "knockoffs" rely on friction to keep the connectors from popping out.

I have to push on the connector for my "knockoff" remote, but my genuine Canon slides in easily.

Hey everyone!! Don't forget the POTN store! There are wired remotes available for $24.99 and if you go to the remote control tab on the left you will find wireless remotes for $29.99. These are all very nice remotes. Check them out before you spend your money elsewheres.

The manufacturer doesn't want folks using lower tier cameras as a backup for the nicer cams... so they make the accessories different. For example, a rebel xt takes just about the same picture as the 20d... There is a the 1 stop max iso difference and .2 megapixel difference... But all things being equal, you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference short of exif info. So i could accept the batteries being different because the size of the bodies is so different...but there's no good reason for the cable switches to be different, at least from a technical sense. Current model rebels use the same sensors as some of the higher models, but now they've changed to SD, which is brilliant on their part IMO.
