What do you guys think? It was my first real shoot with off camera flash. I have included my settings and I am using a Canon 40D, the flashes were either the 430EXII or 530EX in manual mode triggered by Cactus V4's.

I am open to any criticism as I want to improve.

love the emotion you captured, very lovely
the last one is my favorite =)
criticism? they seem a little soft? perhaps it was the compression from your photo host.

Thank you!

Maybe too shallow DOF? I did compressed them at work with ImageResizer from M$ though.

Here are the full size photos as exported out of Lightroom.

If photos are for mood, three cheers to you :) if photos are for photographic precision then #123 are a bit soft even in the full size. Personally I liked them ALL :)
(Image resizing spoilt the crispness to a great extent, thanks for providing with the full sizes)

great shot's - but yes, they are a little soft - maybe you have to use a different apeture- maybe 2.0 or 2.8..

Thanks! All my other lenses can only go down to f/3.5 so I think I go overboard with the nifty fifty with how low it can go.

#1 looks soft but is cute of them
#2 colors look strange??
#3 Love it - (though some would care about the hand being cut off)
#4 very sweet and I like the feel of it :)

I love #4. I like #3, but I wish mom had a different expression.

#2 had a filter applied to it so that's why the colors look a bit different. #3...ya it was just a quick shot in between shoots and I was a bit too close with the nifty fifty.

Thanks for the critiques!

Love the expression in #1 although a bit soft. Not sure I like #2 because of the blow outs of her hair and ear. #3 I feel is too tight as mentioned. Love #4 which is my favorite!

#3 and 4 are very nice captures.

You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away and know when to run
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealing's done

#1 I don't mind the off-centered comp, some rim lighting would be nice on the right shoulder/arm. Maybe do away with some of the unproductive black space at right. Nice pose
#2 Too much backlighting. It's distracting and takes away from the softness of your subject. Clothes almost washed out. I like the look away from the lens.
#3 Nice lighting and tonal values. Could work as an ad with mother chasing distracted kid.
#4 Lot of shadows to deal with. I like it close like this. Maybe try in Black and White

Overall 3.5/5
