OK, here's a version with a somewhat more even background. I really need to do better getting this right in camera as doing it in front of a PC is a lot less fun :)

How does it look?

It looks fine. You could also try duplicating the layer in PS, set the top layer to screen mode, knock it back a bit to 50% or so, and then mask out the family. That would help keep it more even.

If you are planning to print it out, I would work on it a bit more, but if its just for the screen, then it look great as is.

I have a set of image, all taken with the same background lighting (although the subject lighting was varied in a relatively minor way) and I am planning to print at least some of them. I guess your comment refers to the fact that on a screen the images are backlit, not being so on a print they might still look a little dull? Or did I misunderstand?

Either way, thanks for your help.

Use the magic selection tool in photoshop to select all the grey in the image. Just click around the backdrop until it's all selected (inc the area behindMum and under the legs). Now with a high res image you want a decent feather so that you don't get a hard line - lets say you feather by around 30 pixels.

Now do a levels adjustment layer. Drag the white triange to the left a tad to brighten the backdrop up. How far you go is up to you, but I have to admit I don't mind the soft grey backdrpo. I think it's noce - too much is played on the pure white everyone uses (inc me) :)

It does help though to try and have an even background so the easiest thing to do is make it all white.

Nice shots.
