Hey!

I promised myself a while back not to start this kind of gear-whoring thread again, but it seems I had to break that promise..

This is basically a callout for any experienced enablers; should I get myself a 1Ds mkIII?

As listed in my sig, I have a 1D mkII (1D2 from now on), and absolutely love the body - won´t get rid of it any time soon. It´s splendid.

What I´ve done, which I don´t think I should have, was try out my 24-70L on my dad´s 1Ds mkII (1Ds2 from now on), and the usefulness of the lens seemed to increase by a lot. Not only did i find the viewfinder brighter - I was used to primes three stops faster than the 24-70 - but the pictures taken with a tripod at the same shutter speeds, aperture values and ISO speeds were obviously sharper with the 1Ds2 than they were with my 1D2.

Given that I in addition to this sharpness advantage can decrease the pixel amount by a significant bit with a RAW recorded with the 1Ds2, and still have it make a larger final image than with the 1D2, it makes sense to make the jump to an even bigger resolution with the 1Ds3, although the pixel density might take its toll on the lens - this is something that can be fixed in post.

On my 1D2, I´ve turned the max FPS down to 6 to get "more" time out of the buffer. I never spray for that long anyway (three seconds to fill it, I believe). The max FPS of the 1Ds3 is 5, and I don´t need anything more than that. I think. Since the buffer maxes out at 15 RAWs, I´d get the same three seconds as with my 1D2.

As a going out to shoot pair, I´d have the 1Ds3 with my 24-70L, and my 1D2 with a 70-200/2.8L IS or a 300/2.8L IS depending on future budget.

I´ve pretty much convinced myself to go buy myself a used 1Ds3 as soon as my budget allows for it, but convince me some more, if you´d like!

Anyone have real life photography samples shot with the 1Ds3 and 24-70L? Not of boxes, those are for all purposes and intents pretty much useless, in my opinion, obviously.. ;)

I´ve thought about getting the 5DmkII, but I rather like the AF, build and handling of my 1D2 (and before that, the original 1D) - it´s addicting..

You can mention the Nikon D3s/x all you like, but I´m not going to convert. It´s good to have a dad back home to share lenses with! Makes for fun and not too heavy photo excursions out on the coast (and my budget really can´t take the switch).

Oh, a picture I rather like from last night - fishing boat in a North-Norwegian fjord. Nevermind the flare and that the boat is slightly out of focus - the sunlight was pretty tough to see through for both myself and the camera AF!

I have a 1D2 and wish I could add a 1Ds3 to my arsenal! A 1Ds2 is more realistic for me but if you can swing the 3, go for it! Only odd thing with the 3 is you lose the 45 separate AF points, you can only actually choose from 19. You lose a few other little things with the 3 too, you can't bracket by ISO anymore, etc. The put 45 AF points back on the 1D4 and likely the 1Ds4 will get them as well but that's not even out yet of course.

I honestly can't wait until the 1Ds IV makes face with the public. Why? It will make the 1Ds II and 1Ds III that much more financially feasible. :D

I don't think you can go wrong with either a 1Ds II or III (especially having a 1D II on the back-burner for when you need speed) That's just my opinion though and of course, you mileage may vary.
